You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to know that the cost of living in London is extremely high. In fact, if you were Sherlock Holmes you’d have a lot of trouble making ends meet – unless you could rustle up £7,680 (about Dh37,000) per month.
This was deduced by a contributor to the Quora website, where enthusiasts answer questions posed by users. Kynan Eng, a tech engineer, noted that renting a two-bedroom flat in the Baker Street area at current prices would cost the great detective about £3,300. He then factored in everything from wages for Mrs Hudson, the housekeeper, to taxi fares and servicing Holmes’s various habits. Even accounting for a contribution from his flatmate, Dr Watson, Holmes’s monthly costs are substantially more than the average British salary of £2,200 per month.
So how does Holmes manage it all? Elementary, my dear reader: he’s a fictional character. Real life is, sadly, a lot more expensive – and a lot less predictable – than the realm of fantasy.
