We need to honour bravery of selfless Thai cave rescuers

I refer to your report Thai cave boys describe two-week ordeal after release from hospital (July 18): the children have done their nation proud through their gratitude for all those who worked to rescue them.

I do hope that the Thai government will provide for the family of the Thai Navy seal Saman Gunan, who lost his life in the rescue effort.

A memorial to him, in the form of his statue at the entrance of the cave, would be a fitting tribute to him and would also stand as a symbol of the selflessness of the rescuers.

The decision to regulate beaches stirs debate

I write in reference to the article Dubai to introduce more family-only beaches (July 19): although there are many beaches in Dubai where the issues detailed in the piece do not occur, I've been to one of the beaches in the city where fully dressed grown men came in groups and just stared.

It was uncomfortable. I understand the need for this decision.

I have a question for the father of a seven-year-old, who was quoted in the article as saying: “Many men and labourers go to public beaches”.

Excuse my ignorance but I thought that labourers qualified as people too?

Open up the beaches to our canine companions

Ellen Fortini's article Keeping dogs cool in the UAE summer - in pictures (July 18) reminded me that, sadly, there is still not a single metre of beach where we can take our dogs.

Humans litter and destroy the beaches while our canine friends are not allowed to roam freely.

I dream of success: boss Ahlaam Ali is an inspiration

I felt inspired by your article about single mother and entrepreneur Ahlaam Ali in Money & Me: 'I came to Dubai with nothing apart from my son' (July 19), and wanted to say: keep the ahlaam (dreams).

Should late investors consider cryptocurrencies?

Wealth managers recommend late investors to have a balanced portfolio that typically includes traditional assets such as cash, government and corporate bonds, equities, commodities and commercial property.

They do not usually recommend investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies due to the risk and volatility associated with them.

“It has produced eye-watering returns for some, whereas others have lost substantially as this has all depended purely on timing and when the buy-in was. If someone still has about 20 to 25 years until retirement, there isn’t any need to take such risks,” Rupert Connor of Abacus Financial Consultant says.

He adds that if a person is interested in owning a business or growing a property portfolio to increase their retirement income, this can be encouraged provided they keep in mind the overall risk profile of these assets.

Going grey? A stylist's advice

If you’re going to go grey, a great style, well-cared for hair (in a sleek, classy style, like a bob), and a young spirit and attitude go a long way, says Maria Dowling, founder of the Maria Dowling Salon in Dubai.
It’s easier to go grey from a lighter colour, so you may want to do that first. And this is the time to try a shorter style, she advises. Then a stylist can introduce highlights, start lightening up the roots, and let it fade out. Once it’s entirely grey, a purple shampoo will prevent yellowing.
“Get professional help – there’s no other way to go around it,” she says. “And don’t just let it grow out because that looks really bad. Put effort into it: properly condition, straighten, get regular trims, make sure it’s glossy.”
