The victory is almost unbelievable considering his age and that he remained absent for sometime from the game due to the injuries he had suffered last year. His positive spirit should serve as an inspiration for other players. The way he spoke about his opponent, Marin Cilic - "He's a hero," he said - showed he was a fine person, too. It's his pleasant personality that won him many hearts across the world.

Qatar’s propaganda efforts are just a waste of money
I refer to the news item Qatar co-opting London taxis for its propaganda (July 15). To be absolutely honest I don't think a single Brit would have paid any attention. There is so much advertising on transport that you just don't look at it any more. I can't remember the last advertisement I paid attention to and I wasn't that long ago on the tube. Qatar simply wasted a good deal of money.

We need research to back statement on effects of pesticides
You cannot make assumptions on this kind of cases without further research and peer reviewed case studies (Doctors in UAE report increase in chronic illnesses due to pesticides, July 16). The report suggested that fruits and vegetable could be banned from five countries, but cancer is linked to consumption of meat and dairies, especially processed food, and not to fruits and vegetables.

Remarks by Qatar Airways chief are in bad taste
The remark by the Qatar Airways executive was terrible and sexist (American Airlines slams 'offensive' remarks by Qatar Airways chief executive, July 13). I'd prefer to be served by warmhearted grandmothers than by some young women with an artificial smile on their faces.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Another way to earn air miles
In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability.
