I write to you in reference to your editorial The National at 12: we are always changing with the times (April 17). This anniversary editorial was a pleasant read. As a long-time reader of these pages I have witnessed The National's immense growth over the years. I am very happy that the newspaper is now entering its 13th year. As the editorial has mentioned, the newspaper's first cover when it launched in 2008 featured the story of Nabeel Kamran, a young boy from Sharjah who had undergone a successful organ transplant. Now, the world faces an immense health crisis. And The National continues to cover the world's latest developments. I wish the editorial team and all the other employees at The National the very best. Keep up the good work.

South Africa could become a beacon of hope for the continent
I write to you in reference to your article South African Airways plans to lay off entire workforce following government bail-out refusal (April 18). South Africa is a wonderful country, but it is facing many challenges including HIV/Aids, violent crime, poverty and unemployment.
But it is also regarded as Africa's best hope, both politically and economically. South Africa can serve as a role-model for its neighbours and lift up the African continent.
A successful South Africa would become a great beacon of hope. We can show the world that if a country adheres to democracy, sound economic management and good governance; anything is possible.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

How do Sim card scams work?
Sim swap frauds are a form of identity theft.
They involve criminals conning mobile phone operators into issuing them with replacement Sim cards by claiming to be the victim, often pretending their phone has been lost or stolen in order to secure a new Sim.
They use the victim's personal details - obtained through criminal methods - to convince such companies of their identity.
The criminal can then access any online service that requires security codes to be sent to a user's mobile phone, such as banking services.
What sanctions would be reimposed?
Under ‘snapback’, measures imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council in six resolutions would be restored, including:
- An arms embargo
- A ban on uranium enrichment and reprocessing
- A ban on launches and other activities with ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, as well as ballistic missile technology transfer and technical assistance
- A targeted global asset freeze and travel ban on Iranian individuals and entities
- Authorisation for countries to inspect Iran Air Cargo and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines cargoes for banned goods

British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
