Exercise utmost caution when selling your car

My husband and I live in Abu Dhabi. We recently sold our beloved car for Dh250,000, only to realise that we had been scammed. The person who took the car deposited the cheque in our bank account (how naive we were to think that a bounced cheque would land the issuer in trouble). We chose this mode of payment because the amount was big. The next day, the cheque bounced. We messaged and tried to call him, but he didn't respond. The man acted so well that we never doubted him. He even bought us coffee on our way to the bank.

We have since been running to the police station, the traffic department and the bank. I'm sharing my experience so that people exercise caution when selling their cars. Our hard-earned savings have disappeared overnight. We will perhaps never get the car or the money back.

We need quality items and better customer service

Awok is an amazing company (Generation Start-up: Awok founder solving a retail problem for UAE's underserved mass market, August 12). It's much better than many companies here in terms of customer service.

I am not a fan of online purchases. I think people should go out, interact with others and enjoy shopping. We need to socialise rather than acting like robots.

Breastfeeding campaigns are often counterproductive

I refer to the article, Mother says pressure to breastfeed can be counter-productive (August 13). I am a neonatologist and over many years, I faced aggressive campaigns in support of breastfeeding. They are often counterproductive because of the stress they cause to women. I know how they can negatively impact the perception of breastfeeding as a natural process.

Generational responses to the pandemic

Devesh Mamtani from Century Financial believes the cash-hoarding tendency of each generation is influenced by what stage of the employment cycle they are in. He offers the following insights:

Baby boomers (those born before 1964): Owing to market uncertainty and the need to survive amid competition, many in this generation are looking for options to hoard more cash and increase their overall savings/investments towards risk-free assets.

Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980): Gen X is currently in its prime working years. With their personal and family finances taking a hit, Generation X is looking at multiple options, including taking out short-term loan facilities with competitive interest rates instead of dipping into their savings account.

Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996): This market situation is giving them a valuable lesson about investing early. Many millennials who had previously not saved or invested are looking to start doing so now.
