Your article At least 17 dead as gunman opens fire in Florida school (February 15) was painful to read. The gunman who shot 17 innocent students had been expelled from the school. That he went on to acquire weapons and unleash death is deeply saddening. The trauma and fear induced by massacres such as these will haunt young people for the rest of their lives. The Trump administration now has a moral obligation to eradicate the gun culture. Citizens' safety is the most important undertaking of any government.

The abaya is an item of clothing to be cherished
I refer to Shireena Al Nowais piece I love my abaya, but will it be embraced by my daughter? (February 15), the abaya is a beautiful traditional dress and shows a sense of cultural pride. Please keep hold of this unique clothing in an ever homogenising world.

Artificial intelligence cannot replace human endeavour
I refer to your story UAE to phase out immigration officers in favour of AI by 2020 (February 14). I believe the human element is very important, not least because humans also aren't prone to hacking.

Maid visits to embassies should be mandatory
I refer to your article Body of Filipina maid found in freezer flown home from Kuwait (February 16). There should be mandatory embassy visits a few times a year to ensure the safety of maids.

The UAE’s generosity provides a lesson in tolerance
In reference to your recent editorial, Landmark Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi is an emblem of tolerance (February 14), the UAE is very generous in permitting the building of another elegant Hindu temple in the country. India should learn from this and draw from the same spirit of secularism and religious freedom. Instead of fighting as to whether the disputed site in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh state, a subject of great acrimony, should be used to build a temple or a mosque, India should build both in a spirit of accommodation of all religions.
