On Sunday, residents of Dubai Marina were shocked and surprised to wake up to signs placed by Emaar banning dogs from public spaces (Pet owners in Dubai Marina demand dog ban be reversed, July 15).
This unilateral decision will confine hundreds of dogs to their apartments and virtually ban them from any kind of public space. They are already banned from JBR and the beach, the only other two public areas accessible from Dubai Marina. This rule is a highly discriminatory measure for pet owners.
We do not believe this decision is aligned with Emaar’s spirit of “shaping lifestyles”. In other major cities, dogs are an integral part of the community and they enjoy the public space in harmony. Dubai will be lagging behind if this rule is enforced.

Differing views on cut-price movers

You have to pay money to get professionals. If you pay peanuts, you then have to accept what follows.

Preventing Muslim cliches on screen
Your story, Fox's new series Tyrant a series of unfortunate clichés (July 15), quotes Jack Shaheen saying that just a few people in Hollywood who are qualified to lobby could have ensured that a series like Tyrant doesn't get made and, even if it does, it wouldn't be so awful.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council does that kind of lobbying, but is limited by an incredibly sensitive media in the US that sees any constructive feedback as an attack on free speech.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

ETFs explained
Exhchange traded funds are bought and sold like shares, but operate as index-tracking funds, passively following their chosen indices, such as the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and the FTSE All World, plus a vast range of smaller exchanges and commodities, such as gold, silver, copper sugar, coffee and oil.
ETFs have zero upfront fees and annual charges as low as 0.07 per cent a year, which means you get to keep more of your returns, as actively managed funds can charge as much as 1.5 per cent a year.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five biggest providers BlackRock’s iShares range, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisors SPDR ETFs, Deutsche Bank AWM X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”
