The UAE is already a global aviation hub, and it is on track to becoming a centre for the leisure cruising industry. The number of ships docking in the capital this season will be up 20 per cent on the 2014-15 season. Abu Dhabi Ports expects more than 200,000 passengers to arrive between September and May next year at Zayed Port, where a new cruise terminal will open by the end of the year. This figure is expected to rise to 300,000 by 2019-20.
The spin-offs for the tourism industry are obvious, as are the benefits for retailers when thousands of potential new customers descend on the city each time a ship docks.
As more ships come to the UAE – this season, three companies will have vessels doing weekly trips docking in Dubai and Abu Dhabi – there will be opportunities in the non-tourism economy. Big ships are like cities, and they require a whole range of services from fuel to waste-disposal and reliable supplies of fresh produce. Enterprising local businesses stand to benefit from this influx.

Expo 2020 Dubai will be the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia

The rules on fostering in the UAE
A foster couple or family must:
- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
- not be younger than 25 years old
- not have been convicted of offences or crimes involving moral turpitude
- be free of infectious diseases or psychological and mental disorders
- have the ability to support its members and the foster child financially
- undertake to treat and raise the child in a proper manner and take care of his or her health and well-being
- A single, divorced or widowed Muslim Emirati female, residing in the UAE may apply to foster a child if she is at least 30 years old and able to support the child financially
