Despite the fact that we have lived here for centuries, Israel has always attempted to make its Palestinian citizens feel like strangers on their own land. The Israelis established a system of institutional discrimination against non-Jewish citizens, yet they were still careful to keep up appearances by stating that they are "the only democracy in the Middle East". In effect, Israel is a democracy for Jews and Jewish for Arabs. It is a theocracy that has pushed for the establishment of one-state with two-separate systems: one for the privileged population, the Jews, and the other for the second class of Arab Palestinians. Now things are clearer: by approving the new nation state law, Israel has become an apartheid regime that is based on Jewish supremacy.
Even before this piece of legislation, which provides full political and national rights only to the Jewish population, there were already more than 50 laws in Israel that discriminated only against non-Jewish citizens. But the significance of this law goes beyond the immediate discrimination that Palestinian citizens of Israel suffer in accessing services, as it reaffirms the illegal annexation of East Jerusalem and promotes further Jewish colonisation. It also seeks to bury the two-state solution and make it impossible to have two independent states living side by side in peace and security.
The Israeli government felt confident to push this law forward because the Trump administration is fully behind them. Donald Trump’s Middle East team – Jason Greenblatt, special representative for international negotiations, Jared Kushner, senior adviser, and Ambassador David Friedman - share the same radical ideology as the current Israeli government. They don’t look at Palestinians as equals and have not even been able to utter terms such as “Palestinian rights” or “Palestinian state”.
In addition to the US position, the European Union has reassured Israel on several occasions that it won’t impose sanctions for its systematic violations of International law and UN resolutions, strengthening Israel’s culture of impunity. In fact, Emanuele Giaufret, the EU ambassador to Israel, repeatedly insists on repeating the line that the European Union and Israel share the values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
But now the European Union has a responsibility to act based on its own principles. The EU-Israel association agreement establishes that “relations between the parties, as well as all the provisions of the agreement itself, shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles, which guides their internal and international policy and constitutes an essential element of this agreement.”
The nation state law denies the right to self-determination to all Palestinians, the "non-Jewish population" living in the historic land of Palestine, including Israel and the occupied territory of Palestine: Christians, Muslims and Druze, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Galilee to the Naqab desert. They represent more than 50 per cent of the total population living under Israeli control. Is the European Union willing to accept this reality of apartheid as part of some so-called "shared values" between Israel and the EU? Could any European representative refer to this situation as the "democratic principles" upon which the EU-Israel association agreement was conditioned?
Pro-Israel advocates will insist that some Palestinian citizens are part of the Israeli Knesset and that they have remained a democracy. But the nation state law never mentions that word. The fact that matters is that democracy goes way beyond our presence in the parliament and Israel can no longer claim to have the status of a democracy. In fact, the Knesset automatically rejects the discussion of any bill calling for full equality for all citizens of the state without religious or national distinctions. A bill I bring every year on equal allocation of land for all citizens has been consistently rejected.
The Israeli ethnocracy has become as an apartheid regime. This is not going to change until Israel pays the price for its racism, arrogance and violations of international law. The European Union and its member states have the choice of either continuing to encourage such systematic policies by ignoring reality, or they can take action in order to save the prospects of a just and lasting peace that safeguards the rights of all, Israelis and Palestinians, Christians, Druze Muslims and Jews. Being Israel's first trade partner, Europe has enough tools to stop the madness encouraged and enabled by the Trump administration.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

The World Health Organisation estimates it affects about 30 million people each year and that about six million die.
Of those about three million are newborns and 1.2 are young children.
Patients with septic shock must often have limbs amputated if clots in their limbs prevent blood flow, causing the limbs to die.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
