There was a palpable buzz of excitement along the Abu Dhabi Corniche on Friday as a crowd, mostly American expatriates, celebrated the appearance on the beach of US television host Al Roker. The long-time co-anchor and weatherman for NBC's Today show was here to present his daily segment and to record an item for a new Travel Channel show, 50/50, in which two contestants faced the very agreeable challenge of spending $50,000 in the capital within 50 hours.
Roker is a familiar figure to audiences in the US and dozens of other countries where Today is screened, and his presence here was no doubt greatly appreciated by tourism operators.
We all benefit when international influencers like Roker visit our city and tell the world about it. Time and again, their message is that coming to Abu Dhabi was not only a vastly enjoyable experience, it also shattered a few of their misconceptions.

World Cut Steakhouse, Habtoor Palace Hotel, Dubai. On Thursday evening, head chef Diego Solis will be serving a high-end sounding four-course meal that features chestnut veloute with smoked duck breast, turkey roulade accompanied by winter vegetables and foie gras and pecan pie, cranberry compote and popcorn ice cream.

This New Orleans-style restaurant is keen to take the stress out of entertaining, so until December 25 you can order a full seasonal meal from its Takeaway Turkey Feast menu, which features turkey, homemade gravy and a selection of sides – think green beans with almond flakes, roasted Brussels sprouts, sweet potato casserole and bread stuffing – to pick up and eat at home.

Nolu’s, The Galleria Mall, Maryah Island Abu Dhabi. With much of the menu focused on a California inspired “farm to table” approach (with Afghani influence), it only seems right that Nolu’s will be serving their take on the Thanksgiving spread, with a brunch at the Downtown location from 12pm to 4pm on Friday.

- be Muslim, Emirati and be residing in the UAE
