The suspect behind an apparent assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump was charged with federal gun crimes in a Florida court on Monday morning.
Reports from the courtroom said Ryan Wesley Routh appeared in federal court in West Palm Beach shackled in a prison jumpsuit.
Mr Routh was formally charged with possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon and with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to court documents, which could bring years in prison if he is convicted of either charge.
Mr Routh could face more charges as the investigation continues, CNN reported, quoting law officials.
The US Secret Service on Sunday saw an SKS-style rifle with a scope poking out of bushes at Trump International Golf Course where Mr Trump was playing a round and an agent fired his weapon towards it, the Justice Department said. Mr Routh was then seen running towards his vehicle.
The court documents revealed that mobile phone data suggests the would-be assassin was in the bushes for about 12 hours before he was seen and apprehended in a police chase.
Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe told reporters that Mr Routh did not "have line of sight to the former president" and he did not fire any shots.
"He did not fire or get off any shots at our agent. With reports of gunfire, the former president's protection detail immediately evacuated the president to a safe location," Mr Rowe said.
Mr Trump was unharmed in the incident and in a later post on social media he thanked the Secret Service and Florida law enforcement for keeping him safe.
“I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes – it was certainly an interesting day,” he wrote.
This is the second assassination attempt against Mr Trump in two months, after a gunman opened fire during a July campaign event in Pennsylvania, injuring the former president and killing a rallygoer.
“Thank God, the president is OK,” President Joe Biden said on Monday morning.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the Justice Department will work “tirelessly” with “every available resource” in investigating the foiled attack on Mr Trump.
“We are grateful that the former president is safe,” Mr Garland said in a statement. "We will work tirelessly to ensure accountability, and we will bring every available resource to bear in this investigation.”
Interviews with witnesses and those who know the suspect are continuing, authorities said. The Secret Service, which provides security for US leaders and former presidents, has faced backlash over the two close calls this summer.
The agency's director, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned after the first assassination attempt against Mr Trump.
“One thing I want to make clear: the Secret Service needs more help and Congress should respond to that need,” Mr Biden said.
Mr Rowe met Mr Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Monday afternoon.
"I've had a conversation with the former president," he said. "We've explained and we've worked with the campaign. The president is aware that he has highest levels of protection that the Secret Service is providing."
Local County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said: "The security level at Mar-a-Lago is the highest it can possibly be now."
International reaction
Mr Routh is known as an activist who tried to get volunteers to fight for Ukraine in its defence against Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was glad Mr Trump is safe, and declared that “political violence has no place anywhere in the world” in his condemnation of the assumed assassination attempt.
Russia said the suspect's Ukrainian links were proof that “playing with fire has consequences", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “very worried” about the attempt on Mr Trump.
“It is really important that we're all very, very clear that violence has no part to play at all in any political process.”
The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attempted assassination, rejecting all forms of violence and extremism.
Mr Routh remains in police custody. An arraignment is scheduled for September 30.

Keep it fun and engaging
Stuart Ritchie, director of wealth advice at AES International, says children cannot learn something overnight, so it helps to have a fun routine that keeps them engaged and interested.
“I explain to my daughter that the money I draw from an ATM or the money on my bank card doesn’t just magically appear – it’s money I have earned from my job. I show her how this works by giving her little chores around the house so she can earn pocket money,” says Mr Ritchie.
His daughter is allowed to spend half of her pocket money, while the other half goes into a bank account. When this money hits a certain milestone, Mr Ritchie rewards his daughter with a small lump sum.
He also recommends books that teach the importance of money management for children, such as The Squirrel Manifesto by Ric Edelman and Jean Edelman.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Why does a queen bee feast only on royal jelly?
Some facts about bees:
The queen bee eats only royal jelly, an extraordinary food created by worker bees so she lives much longer
The life cycle of a worker bee is from 40-60 days
A queen bee lives for 3-5 years
This allows her to lay millions of eggs and allows the continuity of the bee colony
About 20,000 honey bees and one queen populate each hive
Honey is packed with vital vitamins, minerals, enzymes, water and anti-oxidants.
Apart from honey, five other products are royal jelly, the special food bees feed their queen
Pollen is their protein source, a super food that is nutritious, rich in amino acids
Beewax is used to construct the combs. Due to its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial elements, it is used in skin treatments
Propolis, a resin-like material produced by bees is used to make hives. It has natural antibiotic qualities so works to sterilize hive, protects from disease, keeps their home free from germs. Also used to treat sores, infection, warts
Bee venom is used by bees to protect themselves. Has anti-inflammatory properties, sometimes used to relieve conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, nerve and muscle pain
Honey, royal jelly, pollen have health enhancing qualities
The other three products are used for therapeutic purposes
Is beekeeping dangerous?
As long as you deal with bees gently, you will be safe, says Mohammed Al Najeh, who has worked with bees since he was a boy.
“The biggest mistake people make is they panic when they see a bee. They are small but smart creatures. If you move your hand quickly to hit the bees, this is an aggressive action and bees will defend themselves. They can sense the adrenalin in our body. But if we are calm, they are move away.”

How to become a Boglehead
Bogleheads follow simple investing philosophies to build their wealth and live better lives. Just follow these steps.
• Spend less than you earn and save the rest. You can do this by earning more, or being frugal. Better still, do both.
• Invest early, invest often. It takes time to grow your wealth on the stock market. The sooner you begin, the better.
• Choose the right level of risk. Don't gamble by investing in get-rich-quick schemes or high-risk plays. Don't play it too safe, either, by leaving long-term savings in cash.
• Diversify. Do not keep all your eggs in one basket. Spread your money between different companies, sectors, markets and asset classes such as bonds and property.
• Keep charges low. The biggest drag on investment performance is all the charges you pay to advisers and active fund managers.
• Keep it simple. Complexity is your enemy. You can build a balanced, diversified portfolio with just a handful of ETFs.
• Forget timing the market. Nobody knows where share prices will go next, so don't try to second-guess them.
• Stick with it. Do not sell up in a market crash. Use the opportunity to invest more at the lower price.
