Six people will appear in court in the UK today charged with terrorism offences linked to alleged activity for the proscribed group Palestine Action.
The charges relate to organising demonstrations in support of Palestine Action in London, Manchester and Cardiff between July and August, as well as planning another gathering on Saturday, September 6, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
They also relate to 13 Zoom meetings the six suspects attended in those two months.
They have been remanded in police custody and are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Among them is Timothy Crosland, 55, a former government lawyer and co-founder of Defend Our Juries, the group campaigning for the proscription of Palestine Action to be overturned.
The arrests came days before a second major demonstration in support of Palestine Action was planned.
Campaign group Defend Our Juries said that five of its spokespeople had been arrested on Tuesday, when the Met Police announced its arrests, as they planned a press conference about the upcoming demonstration.
Around 1,500 people have said they would join the demonstration, with numbers swelling after Defend Our Juries announced the arrest of Mr Crosland and five of its spokespeople on Tuesday.
Another man was also charged on Tuesday, September 2, as part of a connected investigation being led by Police Scotland.
More than 700 people have been arrested for expressing support for Palestine Action since the group was banned in July.
The demonstration on Saturday will see people holding up signs saying “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”, which could have them arrested under section 13 of the Terrorism Act.
Protesters have been told by organisers to go “floppy” when arrested and not to comply with street bail so as to make the arrests more difficult.
Detective Chief Superintendent Helen Flanagan, head of operations for the Counter Terrorism Command, said the arrests came after a “proactive investigation” and warned against joining further demonstrations.
“While we cannot comment further on these specific cases now that they have been charged, I do want to reiterate that there are potentially serious consequences for those who are found guilty of an offence under the Terrorism Act,” she said.
“I therefore urge anyone considering showing public support towards Palestine Action, or indeed any other proscribed group, to reconsider.”
She pointed that other protests and demonstrations in support of the Palestinian cause were able to continue as she urged Palestine Action supporters to join those instead.
“We know there is a great strength of feeling towards the situation in Palestine and thousands have been able and continue to be able to express their views through protest and demonstrations, without breaking counter terrorism laws.
“Palestine Action is clearly proscribed as a terrorist group, and those showing support for this particular group, or encouraging others to do so can expect to be arrested, investigated and prosecuted.”
Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, warned against social media commentary about the cases online.
The charges come after Anthony Harvey, 59, appeared in private at Oban Sheriff Court in Scotland on Wednesday accused of addressing a private meeting to encourage support for a proscribed organisation – Palestine Action.

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.
It is a crime for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to or receive military-type training from or on behalf of a designated FTO.
Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances removable from, the United States.
Except as authorised by the Secretary of the Treasury, any US financial institution that becomes aware that it has possession of or control over funds in which an FTO or its agent has an interest must retain possession of or control over the funds and report the funds to the Treasury Department.
