Filipina Cristille Cruz Cabral recently moved to an area of Dubai she describes as a “hidden gem”, which also saves her family some rental outlay.
The 36-year-old mother of three, who works in marketing, has lived in the UAE for 10 years. She and her husband Raymond, 37, who is the chief executive of their fledgling business, decided they needed quality space and economical rent. Their children are aged eight, four and three.
They took an apartment in Liwan Oasis, in the Dubai suburbs, in July. She gave The National a look around.
Please tell us about your home
We recently moved to Liwan 2, Liwan Oasis, having spent three beautiful years in Town Square, Al Qudra.
It is a 78.2 square-metre, two-bedroom apartment with two toilets and bathrooms, plus a small balcony. It costs us Dh74,000 to rent.
Why did you choose this place?
Liwan Oasis is a hidden gem in the middle of Dubailand, seven minutes away from Global Village and 20 to 25 minutes away from either the north or south of Dubai.
All of the buildings are low-rise with a maximum of five or six floors.
Since we moved to Liwan, we've also decided to establish our first physical office at Misa Business Centre, in Wavez by Danube, which is five minutes away from home.
Our house is right across from a public park, which has a sand playground, greenery, a picnic area, running track and a basketball court.
You can find lots of grocery stores like Viva and Madina, and most of the online stores do same-day delivery to our area as it’s in the middle of Dubai. Since both of us have cars, we find the location very convenient.
What made you move from your old home?
We moved to Dubai in 2022, having lived in Abu Dhabi for six years.
Since it was our first time living in Dubai and our little family was growing – I was pregnant with my third child – we chose Town Square and loved it.
But we had to look for an alternative when we decided both of us would be full-time with our business, Kyte Marketing, and to focus on our children’s well-being.
My husband started the agency two years ago, focusing on healthcare and lifestyle brands, while I was still a full-time marketing manager for Emaar’s Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. But now, we are growing it together.
Rent in Town Square ranges from Dh90,000 to Dh120,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. When we first moved in 2022, we started at Dh60,000.
Since we’re establishing a start-up, the first consideration was to shift to a more price-competitive option.
Are you happy with what you pay now?
We found it an average, fair rate compared to other areas.
We tried looking for options in Dubai South, Dubailand, Production City, and even Sports City, but felt we were always destined for a new community we wanted to be a part of.
Liwan Oasis is in the middle of Dubai and we believe that we scored a good deal.
How have you made it your home?
I have to give credit to my husband for this; he’s the one into everything interiors and aesthetics.
Our home is inspired by Japandi style (a mixture of Scandinavian and Japanese design) with touches of modern elements from our hobbies and what we like. We designed our home with wooden furniture and nature’s colours.
What amenities do you have?
The last and major consideration for why we moved to Liwan Oasis was the proximity to our children’s school.
Raya (eight) and Rose (four) are both studying at Gems Winchester Dubailand, which is nine minutes away from our location.
My three-year-old son will go to nursery next year and there are great options in the neighbourhood.
Opposite Liwan Oasis is Dubai Silicon Oasis, where we usually buy stuff that we need. There’s Silicon Central Mall there, and larger hypermarkets.
I also got my gym membership from Gymnation DSO, where I go for RPM, body pump and fitness classes two to three times per week.
What would you change about living there?
Given more space for the balcony, I could set up a nice outdoor table with chairs, but we prefer it to be plain for now.
Parking is a challenge since we have two cars. Only one is allowed in the designated parking area.
Are you planning to stay there?
We have thought of buying our own home, but we need to be practical while we’re trying to grow and get settled with our business.
Renting gives us the freedom to make choices that wouldn’t hurt us so much financially.
We have a new business to pursue for growth, and employees to prioritise for now.
Do you think you might buy in the future?
We have friends who have already bought and have been encouraging us to do so.
Since both of us are no longer employees with monthly salaries it would be better to keep it on the list unticked for now.
Once we have mastered the synergy of our business and family life then we definitely would buy, and consider it an investment. We believe we’ll get there in the right time.
We are eyeing a three-bedroom villa in the south of Dubai (Jebel Ali or Dubai Investment Park). Our clients are from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, so it would be good to be in the middle.
Countdown to Zero exhibition will show how disease can be beaten
Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease, an international multimedia exhibition created by the American Museum of National History in collaboration with The Carter Center, will open in Abu Dhabi a month before Reaching the Last Mile.
Opening on October 15 and running until November 15, the free exhibition opens at The Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island, and has already been seen at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The design
The protective shell is covered in solar panels to make use of light and produce energy. This will drastically reduce energy loss.
More than 80 per cent of the energy consumed by the French pavilion will be produced by the sun.
The architecture will control light sources to provide a highly insulated and airtight building.
The forecourt is protected from the sun and the plants will refresh the inner spaces.
A micro water treatment plant will recycle used water to supply the irrigation for the plants and to flush the toilets. This will reduce the pavilion’s need for fresh water by 30 per cent.

Beyond its use for the expo, the pavilion will be easy to dismantle and reuse the material.

From architects to sound technicians and construction companies, a group of experts from 10 companies have created the pavilion.
Work will begin in May; the first stone will be laid in Dubai in the second quarter of 2019.
Construction of the pavilion will take 17 months from May 2019 to September 2020.

Tomato and walnut salad
A lesson in simple, seasonal eating. Wedges of tomato, chunks of cucumber, thinly sliced red onion, coriander or parsley leaves, and perhaps some fresh dill are drizzled with a crushed walnut and garlic dressing. Do consider yourself warned: if you eat this salad in Georgia during the summer months, the tomatoes will be so ripe and flavourful that every tomato you eat from that day forth will taste lacklustre in comparison.
Badrijani nigvzit
A delicious vegetarian snack or starter. It consists of thinly sliced, fried then cooled aubergine smothered with a thick and creamy walnut sauce and folded or rolled. Take note, even though it seems like you should be able to pick these morsels up with your hands, they’re not as durable as they look. A knife and fork is the way to go.
Pkhali
This healthy little dish (a nice antidote to the khachapuri) is usually made with steamed then chopped cabbage, spinach, beetroot or green beans, combined with walnuts, garlic and herbs to make a vegetable pâté or paste. The mix is then often formed into rounds, chilled in the fridge and topped with pomegranate seeds before being served.

Who are the Sacklers?
The Sackler family is a transatlantic dynasty that owns Purdue Pharma, which manufactures and markets OxyContin, one of the drugs at the centre of America's opioids crisis. The family is well known for their generous philanthropy towards the world's top cultural institutions, including Guggenheim Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate in Britain, Yale University and the Serpentine Gallery, to name a few. Two branches of the family control Purdue Pharma.
Isaac Sackler and Sophie Greenberg were Jewish immigrants who arrived in New York before the First World War. They had three sons. The first, Arthur, died before OxyContin was invented. The second, Mortimer, who died aged 93 in 2010, was a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma. The third, Raymond, died aged 97 in 2017 and was also a former chief executive of Purdue Pharma.
It was Arthur, a psychiatrist and pharmaceutical marketeer, who started the family business dynasty. He and his brothers bought a small company called Purdue Frederick; among their first products were laxatives and prescription earwax remover.
Arthur's branch of the family has not been involved in Purdue for many years and his daughter, Elizabeth, has spoken out against it, saying the company's role in America's drugs crisis is "morally abhorrent".
The lawsuits that were brought by the attorneys general of New York and Massachussetts named eight Sacklers. This includes Kathe, Mortimer, Richard, Jonathan and Ilene Sackler Lefcourt, who are all the children of either Mortimer or Raymond. Then there's Theresa Sackler, who is Mortimer senior's widow; Beverly, Raymond's widow; and David Sackler, Raymond's grandson.
Members of the Sackler family are rarely seen in public.
What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
