President Sheikh Mohamed held a phone call with Vladimir Putin, during which the Russian President praised the UAE's role in mediating a prisoner exchange between Moscow and Ukraine.
The two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen relations between the nations. Sheikh Mohamed offered his congratulations to Mr Putin a week before the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which marks the Soviet Union's defeat of Germany in the Second World War, state news agency Wam reported.
Last month, The National reported that the UAE helped to negotiate the release of more than 3,770 Russian and Ukrainian prisoners of war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a statement on X at the time to welcome the release of his country's citizens, as well as thanking the Emirates for the part it played in mediating the agreement.
“Our people are home – one of the best pieces of news that can be. Another 277 warriors have returned home from Russian captivity,” Mr Zelenskyy said.
Earlier on Thursday, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, conveyed the UAE's greetings during a meeting with Mr Putin in Moscow, Wam said. Mohammed Al Jaber, the UAE's ambassador to Russia, also attended the meeting.
Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
