President Sheikh Mohamed on Tuesday received Sirajuddin Haqqani, Afghanistan’s Minister of the Interior, at Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi.
During the meeting, the two men discussed recent developments in Afghanistan and explored ways to strengthen bilateral co-operation, state news agency Wam reported.
They also reviewed efforts to support Afghanistan’s reconstruction and stability, seeking to foster development and prosperity for the Afghan people. Mr Haqqani also commended the UAE’s humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
Afghanistan also released an unspecified number of American citizens from prison in return for an Afghan fighter held in the US, in a deal brokered by Qatar.
"An agreement was reached facilitating the release of an Afghan mujahid, Khan Mohammad, from a US prison in exchange for the release of American nationals," Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
