President Sheikh Mohamed on Monday met Guido Crosetto, Italy’s defence minister, in Abu Dhabi’s Qasr Al Shati.

During the meeting, the two men discussed co-operation between the UAE and Italy, as well as opportunities to develop ties, with a particular focus on defence and military affairs, state news agency Wam reported.

The meeting also addressed developments in the Middle East and efforts to enhance regional security and stability.

Mr Crosetto also met Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, for a tour of the historic Amerigo Vespucci ship in Abu Dhabi.

“I met with Guido Crosetto, the Italian Minister of Defence, aboard the Amerigo Vespucci, to discuss ways to further strengthen UAE-Italy ties and enhance co-operation for regional and global peace and security,” Sheikh Hamdan wrote on X. “We also toured the historic ship.”

Mohamed bin Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei, Minister of Defence Affairs, was also present, alongside a number of senior officials from both sides.

Sheikh Hamdan said Mr Crosetto’s visit highlighted the deep and time-tested relations between the two countries. The meeting also reviewed the latest regional and international developments, with the situation in the Middle East drawing particular attention.

The 93-year-old vessel docked at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal at Mina Zayed on Friday for the start of a five-day visit. Free tours of the ship are being held from 10am until noon on Tuesday.

Mr Crosetto previously outlined his country’s strategies for addressing conflicts across Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen and beyond, in conversation with The National. He also praised Italy’s relationship with the UAE, highlighting its vital role in preventing crises and fostering peace. “The security of this region also determines Italy's security,” he said.
