Dubai has completed the development of the four-lane Al Jamayel Street, a "crucial corridor" that links Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road.

The street stretches 7km and is capable of handling 16,000 vehicles an hour in both directions, the Roads and Transport Authority said on Friday. The route is expected to benefit about 250,000 residents in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, The Gardens, Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Jumeirah Islands, Jumeirah Park, The Springs, Emirates Hills, Dubai Production City and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Trips from Al Jamayel Street to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Deira will become 40 per cent faster, "cutting peak travel time from 20 minutes to 12 minutes", said Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the authority. "Additionally, it will reduce travel time from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street towards Jebel Ali Port by 70 per cent, from 21 minutes to just seven minutes.”

He emphasised that “Al Jamayel Street is a crucial corridor linking Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, enhancing traffic flow between these major routes via First Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Street".

The development project involved the construction of four bridges spanning 2,874 metres, with capacity for 17,600 vehicles an hour. The bridges opened in phases, with the first spanning 666 metres. It can handle 3,200 vehicles an hour, easing traffic flow from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road to Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Production City.

The second bridge, measuring 601 metres, also has two lanes with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles an hour. It will benefit motorists travelling east from Al Jamayel Street to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, then north towards Al Qusais and Deira. The third bridge, which is 664 metres long, supports traffic flow from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road south to Al Yalayis Street towards Jebel Ali Port. It can handle 3,200 vehicles an hour.

The fourth bridge, which opened this month, spans 943 metres and has capacity for 8,000 vehicles an hour. This bridge connects Al Jamayel Street to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road.

Al Jamayel Street Development Project is part of the authority's master plan to develop routes to support the city's transport network and ease traffic.
