Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has led the UAE delegation at the World Without Hunger Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which began on Tuesday. Inaugurated by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the three-day conference aims to advance innovative technology and sustainable practices for global food security.

Sheikh Khaled highlighted the UAE’s commitment to supporting global efforts to strengthen food security and bolster the food and supply chain sectors, while mitigating the effects of climate change. It also reflects the UAE leadership’s long-standing efforts to assist African nations in overcoming challenges across various fields.

The event will consist of technical sessions focused on finding solutions to problems, as well as an investment forum and a high-level political forum. More than 1,500 stakeholders, including heads of state, senior officials and representatives of financial institutions, NGOs and academia are set to attend.

Sheikh Khaled was welcomed at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by Mr Ahmed on Monday evening. An official reception ceremony was held at the airport, with the national anthems of the UAE and Ethiopia played.

On Tuesday the conference will look at ways to tackle hunger and food security issues, before the focus shifts on Wednesday to boosting investment for food security initiatives. Statements by heads of state and senior officials will be issued on Thursday to address the issue of tackling hunger around the world.

Sheikh Khaled is being accompanied on the trip by an official delegation that includes Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, Minister of State, Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Co-operation, Mohamed Al Rashdi, the UAE's ambassador to Ethiopia, and Omran Al Hashemi, Assistant Foreign Minister of Advanced Sciences and Technology.

Sheikh Khaled's Ethiopia visit is his latest overseas engagement since he was named Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in March last year.

On October 29, he travelled to Singapore to strengthen co-operation between the countries. A host of agreements in artificial intelligence, education and renewable energy were signed during his official visit.

In another official visit in October, Sheikh Khaled visited Norway and held talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store. The leaders explored ways to advance co-operation across new, developing and high-growth sectors.

On October 1, he concluded an official visit to Qatar and discussed ways to enhance ties across strategic sectors during his talks with Sheikh Tamim, Emir of Qatar. He also met Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and highlighted the importance of deepening collaboration in several areas.

Last month, Sheikh Khaled completed an official visit to India and witnessed the signing of partnerships between UAE and Indian bodies that extended the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement established in May 2022.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush

Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”

A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.

“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
