The grandfather of two young children killed in a house fire in Fujairah has told how members of the Emirati family battled to save their lives.
Eight-year-old Tayf Al Yammahi and her seven-year-old brother, Naif, died after a blaze broke out at their home in Al Tuwiyain area of the emirate on Tuesday.
Their five-year-old brother, Hamad, was seriously injured in the incident but is recovering.
Emergency crews arrived at the property after being alerted about the incident at 2pm and were able to bring the fire under control.
Rashid Al Yammahi said he arrived to find the home engulfed in smoke.
“My son, the father of the children, called me in distress to inform me about the fire,” he said.
“The door to the children’s room, where three of them were sleeping, got stuck.
"I'm not sure why, maybe the pressure of the heat."
Mr Al Yammahi said his son and other relatives made a desperate effort to open the door.
"They all tried to force open the door but when it was finally opened, the two kids were already dead," he said.
Emergency services sent to the scene gained access to the room and were able to rescue the younger child.
“Emergency crews were on site, and paramedics provided immediate treatment for the five-year-old,” Mr Al Yammahi said.
The child suffered smoke inhalation and burns as a result of the fire.
He was initially taken to Fujairah's Dibba Hospital for treatment but has subsequently been transferred to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, which provides specialised care for burn victims.
“The boy is recovering, but we are not sure yet when he will be discharged,” the grandfather said.
He said two other siblings, aged under four, were in the home at the time but did not require hospital care.
“The family is finding solace in their faith,” he said.
“We do not know the reason for the fire yet. Authorities are still investigating the cause.”
Ammar Al Yammahi, the father of the children, thanked loved ones, friends and neighbours for their support during his family's ordeal.
“My five-year-old son, Hamad, who survived the fire was transferred to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City,” he said.
“His condition is improving, and the attending doctor confirmed his lungs are healthy."
Officials said an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
Maj Gen Mohammed Ahmed bin Ghanem Al Kaabi, Commander-in-Chief of Fujairah Police, expressed his condolences to the family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured child.
Authorities have reminded the public to carry out regular maintenance of electrics in their home to avoid any fires during summer.

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

Coffee: black death or elixir of life?
It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?
Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.
The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.
Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.
The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.
But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.
Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.
It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.
So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.

One in four Americans don't plan to retire
Nearly a quarter of Americans say they never plan to retire, according to a poll that suggests a disconnection between individuals' retirement plans and the realities of ageing in the workforce.
Experts say illness, injury, layoffs and caregiving responsibilities often force older workers to leave their jobs sooner than they'd like.
According to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 23 per cent of workers, including nearly two in 10 of those over 50, don't expect to stop working. Roughly another quarter of Americans say they will continue working beyond their 65th birthday.
According to government data, about one in five people 65 and older was working or actively looking for a job in June. The study surveyed 1,423 adults in February this year.
For many, money has a lot to do with the decision to keep working.
"The average retirement age that we see in the data has gone up a little bit, but it hasn't gone up that much," says Anqi Chen, assistant director of savings research at the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. "So people have to live in retirement much longer, and they may not have enough assets to support themselves in retirement."
When asked how financially comfortable they feel about retirement, 14 per cent of Americans under the age of 50 and 29 per cent over 50 say they feel extremely or very prepared, according to the poll. About another four in 10 older adults say they do feel somewhat prepared, while just about one-third feel unprepared.
"One of the things about thinking about never retiring is that you didn't save a whole lot of money," says Ronni Bennett, 78, who was pushed out of her job as a New York City-based website editor at 63.
She searched for work in the immediate aftermath of her layoff, a process she describes as akin to "banging my head against a wall." Finding Manhattan too expensive without a steady stream of income, she eventually moved to Portland, Maine. A few years later, she moved again, to Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sometimes I fantasise that if I win the lottery, I'd go back to New York," says Ms Bennett.
