UAE allocates $70 million funding for UN aid effort in Sudan

The UAE has allocated its contributions to humanitarian efforts in Sudan by channelling $70 million in aid for UN agencies.

The decision was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, and will allocate 70 per cent of the $100 million commitment made by the UAE in April.

Aid will be directed to UN agencies including the Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Programme, the High Commissioner for Refugees, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation, the ministry said.

The donation will provide “a comprehensive approach to assistance, especially food and health assistance, protecting women and children, and providing livelihoods and shelter in emergency situations”, it added.

It affirms the UAE’s “commitment to addressing various aspects of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan”, the ministry said.

Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Co-operation, announced the aid would go to areas including Al Fasher.

It shows the UAE’s support for the Sudanese people and the importance the Emirates places on tackling “humanitarian challenges” and “extending a helping hand” to those in need, Ms Al Hashimy added.

Since the beginning of the war in Sudan, the UAE has established a humanitarian route with neighbouring South Sudan and Chad, which have taken in thousands of refugees displaced because of the conflict, Ms Al Hashimy said.

The Emirates has provided $130 million, plus 9,500 tonnes of food and medical supplies flown in on 148 relief planes.

It has also sent a ship carrying about 1,000 tonnes of urgent relief supplies. The UAE has also supported Sudanese refugee camps in Abeche and other regions of Chad.

A plane carrying 100 tonnes of food aid was also sent to help to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan through the World Food Programme.

“The UAE has built two field hospitals in Amdgrass and Abeche, Chad, to support Sudanese refugees,” Ms Al Hashimy said. “Their services extend to all civilians, regardless of nationality, age, gender or political affiliation.”

The hospital in Amdgrass has treated more than 29,000 patients since it opened. Ms Al Hashimy repeated the UAE’s call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and continued work to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.

The funding was welcomed by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“We thank the UAE for this generous pledge,” he said on X.

“We must act together to protect the lives of the most vulnerable.”

Martin Griffiths, UN undersecretary for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief co-ordinator, said: “We are very grateful to the government and people of the UAE for this generous support of $70 million to help provide relief to the people of Sudan.

“With this contribution, we can strengthen life-saving support to families and communities besieged by the unprecedented humanitarian crisis.”

A previous version of this story, titled 'UAE announces $70 million funding for UN aid effort in Sudan', stated that the UAE had "boosted its contributions to humanitarian efforts in Sudan". This was incorrect. To clarify, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that 70 per cent of the $100 million pledge agreed in April would be allocated to UN agencies.

Haircare resolutions 2021

From Beirut and Amman to London and now Dubai, hairstylist George Massoud has seen the same mistakes made by customers all over the world. In the chair or at-home hair care, here are the resolutions he wishes his customers would make for the year ahead.

1. 'I will seek consultation from professionals'

You may know what you want, but are you sure it’s going to suit you? Haircare professionals can tell you what will work best with your skin tone, hair texture and lifestyle.

2. 'I will tell my hairdresser when I’m not happy'

Massoud says it’s better to offer constructive criticism to work on in the future. Your hairdresser will learn, and you may discover how to communicate exactly what you want more effectively the next time.

3. ‘I will treat my hair better out of the chair’

Damage control is a big part of most hairstylists’ work right now, but it can be avoided. Steer clear of over-colouring at home, try and pursue one hair brand at a time and never, ever use a straightener on still drying hair, pleads Massoud.

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.
