Three people were killed and another 94 injured when seven carriages of a train derailed in northern Egypt on Saturday, the government announced.
Two of the derailed carriages overturned, state-owned Egypt Railways said.
The train was travelling to the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria from Marsa Matruh, another coastal city to the west, it said.
An earlier statement by the Health Ministry had put the number injured at 54, but this was later revised to 94. All were being treated in hospital, the ministry added.
Transport Minister Kamel Al Wazir, who went to the accident scene, ordered the creation of a technical committee to determine the cause of the derailment.
He said the toughest punishment would be imposed on anyone found responsible for the accident.
Train accidents are not uncommon in Egypt, which has spent billions of dollars upgrading its rail network in recent years. The main causes are human error at level crossings and signal malfunctions.
