Three suicide bombers attacked a paramilitary force headquarters in north-western Pakistan on Monday morning, killing at least three officers.

Eleven others were wounded in the attack on the headquarters of the frontier constabulary paramilitary force in Peshawar.

Saeed Ahmad, a city police chief, said one attacker detonated his explosives at the main gate of the constabulary, while the others were shot and killed by officers near the parking area.

The headquarters is located on Saddar Road, one of Peshawar's busiest roads and close to a military garrison. Mr Ahmad said a swift response by security forces prevented further casualties and the situation was quickly brought under control.

"The attack has concluded and a clearance operation is under way to determine whether any unexploded ordnance is present," said Zulfiqar Hameed, another police official.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tahrik-e-Taliban, have admitted to similar assaults in the country. The 11 wounded people, including two paramilitary personnel, have been taken to Lady Reading Hospital, its spokesman Mohammad Asim said.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and praised the "timely action" of security forces for averting greater loss of life. "We will thwart the evil designs of terrorists who attack Pakistan's integrity," Mr Sharif added.
