The article Streetwise solutions to get our city riding in the right direction (February 18) expressed perfectly my feelings about the lack of urban life in Khalifa City.
We gave up central Abu Dhabi life to let our children have a better living environment a few years ago. We definitely appreciate the more spacious accommodation and our garden in Khalifa City A.
Unfortunately it all ends at the front gate. It really is the little things that make a difference. I have been longing for walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, and a few shops within walking distance.
There is also certainly a desperate need for another Adnoc station, since we all have to drive everywhere.
Khalifa City's infamous pink shops serve a purpose, but parking there is not for the faint-hearted, especially after 5pm.
I do hope the plan to build these "little things" is more immediate than 2030, as my preschoolers will have long outgrown the need for a playground by then.

How much is too much for a bag?
I am unconvinced, to put it mildly, by Designer handbags are a good investment for any woman (M magazine, February 18).
With Dh60,000 I could make a real investment, instead of just buying a bag that will be out of fashion in six months and a magnet for thieves until then.
Worse, women who "invest" in status symbols of this type are sending a plain signal that men don't need to take them seriously.
Yes, men have status symbols too, and more expensive ones. But an overpriced car is more durable than an overpriced bag, and more practical as well, since it provides comfort as well as prestige.

Family firms must find self-discipline
I refer to the story Family companies seek funding to expand abroad (February 17).
Many family-owned companies, small or big, are prone to using the cash tills of the company as their own. Habits die hard.
So first and foremost, before they approach the sukuk or share market for their funding requirements, these companies need discipline in corporate governance, accounting concepts, compliance with international accounting standards, stringent auditing needs and compliance with statutes. Otherwise they're in danger of landing in jail or ignominy.

Noisy children at film are annoying
My wife and I went to a film, Big Miracle, at Marina Mall on Friday evening. It was acceptable but the behaviour of the two young teenage boys beside us was not and almost spoiled the evening for us.
These brats, obviously feeling entitled to do whatever they wanted to do, talked loudly to each other and also played with their drink straws, one of them dripping cola onto me. Worst, one lad had figured out a way to make a shrill, piercing whistling sound with his straw - and kept doing it, even after we asked them politely to stop.
The cinema should find a way to prevent such abuses. Nobody should behave that way with impunity.

What's the name of that street now?
Subdued tribute to a towering legacy (February 15) about the 15th anniversary of Deng Xiaoping's death, reminds me of something I heard when I worked in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, in 2004.
I was told that a main route, originally Kupecheskoi Street, was renamed Grazhdanskaya Street in 1924, Joseph Stalin Street in 1938, XXII Partciyezda Street in 1961, Lenin Street in 1974 and Deng Xiaoping Street in 1997, in honour of friendly relations with China.
The Tiananmen Square clampdown that killed hundreds of protesters was probably the only image-damaging issue for Deng. Some exiles say he did not pay enough attention to fundamentals, but the economic revolutions he and his colleagues brought forth still seem to be favoured by many Chinese.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
