A police officer who was guarding the Brazilian embassy in Tunisia has been fatally stabbed, the Ministry of Interior said on Monday.

The assailant refused to respond to the officer, who asked why he was near the embassy, then attacked him with a sharp object, the ministry said.

The attacker was shot in the leg by police and taken into custody. The officer was taken to hospital, where he later died of his wounds.

Witnesses reported a heavy security presence in the area, which has been cordoned off.

The Ministry of Interior has launched an investigation into the incident, and confirmed that the assailant has been identified as a university employee suffering from mental health problems.

This is a developing story.
