Video emerged of Iranian chief justice, Ebrahim Raisi, being given a huge reception in Baghdad, where he was flanked by Falih Al Fayyadh, leader of the Popular Mobilisation Forces.
Mr Raisi and Mr Al Fayyadh, who is accused of human rights abuses, face sanctions imposed on them by the US.
Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, said the video was “important optics” for Iranian politics.
The Trump administration blacklisted senior Iranian leaders in Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces, an umbrella group composed mainly of Iran-backed Shiite militias.
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the group's chairman, Mr Al Fayyadh, accusing him of human rights offences for his role in quelling protests in Iraq with the support of Iran’s Quds Force, the foreign operations branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
He was part of a “crisis cell” formed in late 2019 to suppress the protests, the US said.
“By directing and supervising the murder of peaceful Iraqi demonstrators, Iran-aligned militants and politicians such as Falih Al Fayyadh have been waging a violent campaign against Iraqi democracy and civil society,” said former Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin.
The film shows Mr Raisi touring the site where the US assassinated top Iranian commander Qassem Suleimani and Iran-aligned PMF leader Abu Mahdi Al Muhandis at Baghdad airport in January 2020.
The US State Department also listed Abd Al Aziz Malluh Mirjirash, the Popular Mobilisation Forces chief of staff and Iran-allied militia leader, as a “specially designated global terrorist” for his role in undermining security in Iraq.
In the final weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency, the US announced new sanctions against Iran’s national oil and tanker companies, which will probably make it harder for President Joe Biden to return to the nuclear deal.

Visa changes give families fresh hope
Foreign workers can sponsor family members based solely on their income
Male residents employed in the UAE can sponsor immediate family members, such as wife and children, subject to conditions that include a minimum salary of Dh 4,000 or Dh 3,000 plus accommodation.
Attested original marriage certificate, birth certificate of the child, ejari or rental contract, labour contract, salary certificate must be submitted to the government authorised typing centre to complete the sponsorship process
In Abu Dhabi, a woman can sponsor her husband and children if she holds a residence permit stating she is an engineer, teacher, doctor, nurse or any profession related to the medical sector and her monthly salary is at least Dh 10,000 or Dh 8,000 plus accommodation.
In Dubai, if a woman is not employed in the above categories she can get approval to sponsor her family if her monthly salary is more than Dh 10,000 and with a special permission from the Department of Naturalization and Residency Dubai.
To sponsor parents, a worker should earn Dh20,000 or Dh19,000 a month, plus a two-bedroom accommodation
Three ways to limit your social media use
Clinical psychologist, Dr Saliha Afridi at The Lighthouse Arabia suggests three easy things you can do every day to cut back on the time you spend online.
1. Put the social media app in a folder on the second or third screen of your phone so it has to remain a conscious decision to open, rather than something your fingers gravitate towards without consideration.
2. Schedule a time to use social media instead of consistently throughout the day. I recommend setting aside certain times of the day or week when you upload pictures or share information.
3. Take a mental snapshot rather than a photo on your phone. Instead of sharing it with your social world, try to absorb the moment, connect with your feeling, experience the moment with all five of your senses. You will have a memory of that moment more vividly and for far longer than if you take a picture of it.
