G7 foreign ministers have condemned last week's attack on the MV Mercer Street vessel off the coast of Oman, which has been blamed on Iran.
The ministers said the assault, which killed a Briton and a Romanian national, was a clear violation of international law, “deliberate and targeted”.
“All available evidence clearly points to Iran. There is no justification for this attack,” the G7 statement said.
“Vessels must be allowed to navigate freely in accordance with international law. We will continue to do our utmost to protect all shipping, upon which the global economy depends, so that it is able to operate freely and without being threatened by irresponsible and violent acts.
“Iran’s behaviour, alongside its support to proxy forces and non-state armed actors, threatens international peace and security. We call on Iran to stop all activities inconsistent with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and call on all parties to play a constructive role in fostering regional stability and peace.”
The company that owns the MV Mercer belongs to Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said there would be a collective response to the attack.
Iran has denied responsibility.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
