The rate of Covid-19 infections is rising in Egypt as the most populous Arab nation falls deeper into the grip of a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Health Minister Hala Zayed said on Saturday.
“Infections in Egypt are increasing by small though regular jumps. They are growing by 10 per cent,” Mrs Zayed told a news conference.
Large crowds packing cafes, restaurants and shopping malls for Ramadan are not helping efforts to contain the spread of the virus, she said.
“It is in your interest to keep these enterprises open,” she told operators of these businesses. “You can only blame yourselves if we close you down.”
Most Egyptians have been casual about or outright ignored safety precautions such as wearing face masks and social distancing.
This has increased markedly since the start of Ramadan on April 13, with people packing cafes, restaurants and the special tents where food is served as live music plays at and after the sunset meal that breaks the daylong fast.
Health Ministry figures show the daily number of infections approaching 900 compared to about 600-700 last month. Deaths hover around 40 to 50 a day.
A total of 220,658 people have contracted Covid-19 since the epidemic began and 12,959 died of the virus as of Friday.
Although the real figures on infections and fatalities are thought to be much higher, the ministry’s statistics are considered a reliable indicator of the “curve” of the epidemic.
Egypt’s vaccine roll-out began in January, but less than one per cent of the country’s 100 million people have received at least one vaccine dose so far.
Mrs Zayed said Egypt signed agreements last week to manufacture locally the Chinese vaccine Sinovac, with 40 million doses to be produced this year. She did not say when production would begin.

Separately, Egypt is in the process of securing a total of 100 million doses for this year, she said.
Surprisingly, only 50 per cent of medical workers, who have priority for vaccination, have registered to receive their shots, the minister said. And of those who registered, only 60 per cent showed up for their vaccination appointment, she said.
The minister appeared to be responding to calls by the doctors’ union for the Health Ministry to speed up the vaccination of medical staff.
The union says a total of 467 doctors have died of Covid-19 since the pandemic began 14 months ago, 50 of them in the last two weeks.
But Mrs Zayed said only 115 doctor deaths were from dealing directly with Covid-19 patients in state-run hospitals.
“The rest caught the virus while [leading normal lives] in society,” she said.
She did not say how many doctors had succumbed to the virus overall.

Microsoft’s ‘hacker-in-chief’ David Weston, creator of the tech company’s Windows Red Team, advises simple steps to help people avoid falling victim to cyber fraud:
1. Always get the latest operating system on your smartphone or desktop, as it will have the latest innovations. An outdated OS can erode away all investments made in securing your device or system.
2. After installing the latest OS version, keep it patched; this means repairing system vulnerabilities which are discovered after the infrastructure components are released in the market. The vast majority of attacks are based on out of date components – there are missing patches.
3. Multi-factor authentication is required. Move away from passwords as fast as possible, particularly for anything financial. Cybercriminals are targeting money through compromising the users’ identity – his username and password. So, get on the next level of security using fingertips or facial recognition.
4. Move your personal as well as professional data to the cloud, which has advanced threat detection mechanisms and analytics to spot any attempt. Even if you are hit by some ransomware, the chances of restoring the stolen data are higher because everything is backed up.
5. Make the right hardware selection and always refresh it. We are in a time where a number of security improvement processes are reliant on new processors and chip sets that come with embedded security features. Buy a new personal computer with a trusted computing module that has fingerprint or biometric cameras as additional measures of protection.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Common OCD symptoms and how they manifest
Checking: the obsession or thoughts focus on some harm coming from things not being as they should, which usually centre around the theme of safety. For example, the obsession is “the building will burn down”, therefore the compulsion is checking that the oven is switched off.
Contamination: the obsession is focused on the presence of germs, dirt or harmful bacteria and how this will impact the person and/or their loved ones. For example, the obsession is “the floor is dirty; me and my family will get sick and die”, the compulsion is repetitive cleaning.
Orderliness: the obsession is a fear of sitting with uncomfortable feelings, or to prevent harm coming to oneself or others. Objectively there appears to be no logical link between the obsession and compulsion. For example,” I won’t feel right if the jars aren’t lined up” or “harm will come to my family if I don’t line up all the jars”, so the compulsion is therefore lining up the jars.
Intrusive thoughts: the intrusive thought is usually highly distressing and repetitive. Common examples may include thoughts of perpetrating violence towards others, harming others, or questions over one’s character or deeds, usually in conflict with the person’s true values. An example would be: “I think I might hurt my family”, which in turn leads to the compulsion of avoiding social gatherings.
Hoarding: the intrusive thought is the overvaluing of objects or possessions, while the compulsion is stashing or hoarding these items and refusing to let them go. For example, “this newspaper may come in useful one day”, therefore, the compulsion is hoarding newspapers instead of discarding them the next day.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
