Israeli forces killed three Palestinians in the West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian officials said, while another Palestinian was shot dead after stabbing a police officer in East Jerusalem, Israeli police said.
In Jerusalem's Old City, the man “pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the officers in his upper leg”, police said. He was shot dead by two other police officers.
Early on Friday, Israeli aircraft struck several targets in the Gaza Strip in response to rockets fired on Thursday evening from the Palestinian enclave.
In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed Daoud Rayan, 42, in Beit Duqqu, north-west of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
Two more Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in Jenin later in the day and four others were wounded, it said.
The incidents come at a time when votes are being counted in the fifth national elections in four years. Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 72, is expected to make a comeback just over a year after he left office.
Mr Netanyahu is still facing corruption charges which he denies.
If he wins, he is likely to form a coalition government with right-wing extremist ministers such as Itamar Ben-Gvir, who wants to take a tougher position on Palestinian attackers.
“The time has come to restore security to the streets,” he said in a tweet on Thursday after the incidents. “The time has come for a terrorist who goes out to carry out an attack to be eliminated.”
This year has proved to be the deadliest for Palestinians in seven years, with more than 130 people killed in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
Israel said on Thursday it would remove checkpoints in and out of the West Bank city of Nablus after a wave of attacks by a group that calls itself the Lions' Den.
Israel's military said it concluded an operation in the West Bank that had resulted in the arrest or killing of the group's top commanders.
Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East War and has since maintained military occupation of the territory and settled more than 500,000 Israelis there.

Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”

Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

How much of your income do you need to save?
The more you save, the sooner you can retire. Tuan Phan, a board member of SimplyFI.com, says if you save just 5 per cent of your salary, you can expect to work for another 66 years before you are able to retire without too large a drop in income.
In other words, you will not save enough to retire comfortably. If you save 15 per cent, you can forward to another 43 working years. Up that to 40 per cent of your income, and your remaining working life drops to just 22 years. (see table)
Obviously, this is only a rough guide. How much you save will depend on variables, not least your salary and how much you already have in your pension pot. But it shows what you need to do to achieve financial independence.
