Boutique spin studio Crank has reopened this week, becoming one of the first gyms in Dubai to introduce partitions between members.
The studio reopened on Sunday, May 31, following the new directives from the government allowing sporting and fitness facilities to operate in the emirate.
As well as following government measures including operating at a 50 per cent capacity and allowing longer breaks between classes to ensure deep cleaning can be carried out, the gym has installed Perspex partitions between riders to further minimise risk.
“We have decided to go with the partitions because we thought it was the logical thing to do,” says Nuno Costa, a trainer at Crank. “The response from our clients has been very, very positive. We often receive messages on our social media, emails and even face to face people saying how safe they feel about having the partitions in the studio, and for us, it’s been great be the first ones to have them.”
The studio in Alserkal Avenue has also ensured bikes and benches are spaced two metres apart and all gym equipment, including bike shoes, are being cleaned with an alcohol-based santiser. Shoes are rotated so that they are not used two classes in a row.
Another important thing to note is that showers and changing rooms, including bathroom lockers, are not currently permitted for use, while toilets and sinks are being deep cleaned after every use.

Also on December 7 to 9, the third edition of the Gulf Car Festival (www.gulfcarfestival.com) will take over Dubai Festival City Mall, a new venue for the event. Last year's festival brought together about 900 cars worth more than Dh300 million from across the Emirates and wider Gulf region – and that first figure is set to swell by several hundred this time around, with between 1,000 and 1,200 cars expected. The first day is themed around American muscle; the second centres on supercars, exotics, European cars and classics; and the final day will major in JDM (Japanese domestic market) cars, tuned vehicles and trucks. Individuals and car clubs can register their vehicles, although the festival isn’t all static displays, with stunt drifting, a rev battle, car pulls and a burnout competition.
