UFC Gym has opened its first branch in Abu Dhabi. The gym, affiliated with Ultimate Fighting Championship, is the third to open in the UAE with the other locations in Business Bay and Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai.
The facility spans 1,600 square metres over three floors of a large villa in Mohammed bin Zayed City. The ground floor features a multifunctional freestyle fitness area while the first floor has a signature 24-foot Octagon, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu mat and a kick-boxing area. The second floor contains the strength and cardio workout equipment as well as group fitness studio.
With Abu Dhabi dubbed "fight island" as a number of mixed martial arts events were held on Yas Island during the pandemic, it's no surprise that a UFC Gym has also made its way to the capital. So, for those who want to train like a fighter, here are five things to know about the newly opened UFC Gym in Abu Dhabi:
There are more than just MMA-inspired classes
The schedule currently features classes for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing, kick-boxing, a cycling group and yoga, and there are plans to include Zumba in the future as well. Children aged 12 to 15 can also take part in classes aimed at getting the youth interested in fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
They offer their own boot camp style workout
UFC Gym offers its own specialised class called DUT, which stands for Daily Ultimate Training. Despite the name, there are no kicks or punches. Instead, the 50-minute class is taught as a boot camp that sometimes incorporates battle ropes, jump ropes, TRX, plyo boxes, kettle bells, free weights and more. Participants go at their own pace and the class is open to all fitness levels.
There’s a user-friendly app
Members will have access to the UFC Gym app that allows for easy booking of classes up to 48 hours beforehand. The app also offers other features, including a look at all the certified UFC gym coaches, the class schedule, access to home workout videos, and membership information.
UFC coaches are specially trained
Most UFC Gym coaches hired have a mixed martial arts background. Upon joining the gym, they have to pass a rigorous certification programme and must also take part in a yearly seven-day intense training session to keep up to date with latest happenings in the fitness industry. Coaches are also reassessed throughout the year.
UFC stars have also trained in the gyms in the past
With some of UFC’s biggest names flying in to the UAE to compete, a number of UFC fighters have stopped by a UFC Gym to get in a workout as part of their regiment ahead of a big bout. In January, Conor McGregor brought his entourage as he stopped by the JBR branch ahead of his fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000

Five years ago, Uber launched in the Middle East. It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.
Today we are taking the next step in this journey—well, it’s more like a leap, and a big one: in a few minutes, we’ll announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Careem. Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.
This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. And since both companies will continue to largely operate separately after the acquisition, very little will change in either teams’ day-to-day operations post-close. Today’s news is a testament to the incredible business our team has worked so hard to build.
It’s a great day for the Middle East, for the region’s thriving tech sector, for Careem, and for Uber.
