For those of you missing your studio fix, there's a way to recreate the zen atmosphere at home instead.
The UAE's yoga instructors have gone digital, offering a variety of online classes via live stream or pre-recorded videos on YouTube.
Some are free, some you have to pay for, but all of them are worth checking out.
Dryp
Dubai's infrared-heated wellness studio is offering free daily classes via Instagram Live. Try Vinyasa Flow with Heather, Hip Hop Vinyasa with Mish and Hiitasana with Linda – to name a few. Classes take place around 7pm or 8pm and the schedule is posted to Dryp's account throughout the week. To truly recreate the studio atmosphere, make sure you turn off the air-conditioning. Or, better yet, do it outside on a balcony or in your garden, if possible.
Karma Yoga
Throughout April and May, Karma Yoga is hosting a range of virtual workshops and retreats. You can learn to create a sacred space with Leelah, uncover the secrets of pranayama breath with Fatima and even continue your yoga teacher training. Prices vary, with four-part workshops costing Dh495 and teacher training Dh10,500. The Dubai Marina studio is also live-streaming regular classes throughout the week. Lotus Yoga
The online class schedule at Lotus Yoga is set until the end of May and they're all being held via live stream. There are classes for beginners, as well as sessions in various types of yoga, including hatha, vinyasa and sivananda. Single sessions cost Dh75 and a package of 10 will set you back Dh650. The team is also hosting special events, such as sound bowl meditation and workshops, through the Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Zen Yoga
Join in Zen Yoga's live-streamed classes, where all of its instructors are hosting their regular sessions. Try Jivamukti with Dina Ghandour, Yin and Pranayama with Claire Clinton or Hatha Flow with Siobhan McGrenra. Mums can also try prenatal yoga sessions, plus there are Pilates classes and teacher training workshops, too. Timings vary throughout the day, starting as early as 7am until 6.30pm. Zoga
Sunrise yoga, restorative sessions and Ashtanga Mysore are just a few of the classes Zoga instructors are offering via live stream on Zoom. Online classes cost Dh45 per session and must be paid for in advance. Once that's done you'll receive an email with a unique link to the class. Yoga La Vie
This Dubai studio is using both Zoom and Instagram to live-stream classes. There are plenty of yoga practices to choose from, including prenatal, vinyasa, ashtanga and yin. Instructors are also offering a range of Pilates sessions, barre lessons and cardio sessions. These happen daily and the schedule is posted a week in advance. The price for a single live-stream class is Dh50 (plus VAT).
Yoga House
If you head to the Yoga House website, you'll find a number of videos with online classes. Danielle leads a 50-minute yoga designed to help you find your strength. Dina hosts a 40-minute Jivamukti yoga session that's open to all levels. Anna has a couple of Pilates sessions, including a one-hour high-intensity class and one that focuses on spinal mobility and stability. Finally, Enrica offers one hour of Hatha Flow. You can access these for free at any time.
The studio is now going live, too. Book at least 30 minutes in advance to access your favourite classes via Zoom. Prices start from Dh40 for a single session or Dh30 per class for a package of 10.
Jivamukti with Dina
While Dina Ghandour is working with a number of Dubai studios on their online schedules, she also leads her own classes throughout the week. There are 75-minute live-stream sessions on Zoom, which cost Dh55, but she's also organised half and full-day retreats that last four to eight hours. Bodytree Studio
Popular Abu Dhabi studio is hosting all of its regular and premium classes live online, with prices starting from Dh50. Regular sessions include a range of yoga practices, but also Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba and ballet, to name a few. Premium offerings include Bodytree Shred, Bounce and Dance Cardio. The Studio
Abu Dhabi's The Studio has also set up live one-hour classes via Zoom. It offers everything from hatha to prenatal and vinyasa yoga, but also kundalini, sound healing and hip openers. On top of that, a few classes are specifically geared towards parents and children, including Mommy and Me Pilates and Take a Break from Homeschooling Hatha. Prices start from Dh35. Inspire Sports
This ladies-only gym in Abu Dhabi has a whole host of live classes on its new Facebook group. This includes yoga with Maria and Yoga Shred with Cecilia. You just need to request to join the group in order to access the classes. Other sessions include Body Pump, Bollywood Grooves and workouts for children. Once you're a member of the group, it's free.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
