Fitness enthusiasts in the UAE are used to exercising in extreme weather, but now thanks to the Dubai Fitness Challenge, they can workout at the other end of the scale in -4°Celsius.
Ski Dubai, the world’s largest indoor ski slope, will be hosting free fitness events over the next two weekends. The first is a snow hike led by trekking group Adventurati that will guide participates up the icy slope in a workout aimed to get the blood pumping and muscles working. The hour-long class will take place on Sunday, November 15, at 8am and is limited to 30 participants.
The following week, international fitness studio F45 will host a free 30-minute high intensity interval training (HIIT) class in the snow on Sunday, November 22, at 8am. It is limited to 20 participants.
All guests planning to attend have to register to secure a spot and are asked to bring their own towels. Participants will also be required to wear a mask during the activity, but may lower it during strenuous exercise if needed. It is advised to wear workout attire, but Ski Dubai jackets and trousers will also be available.
The 30-day challenge, launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, in 2017, returns for its fourth iteration this year. It offers more than 2,000 free fitness sessions across the emirate and runs until Saturday, November 28.
As with previous years, DFC asks Dubai residents to commit to 30 minutes of exercise every day for a 30-day period to improve their health and overall well-being.

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times
If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.
A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.
The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.
In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.
The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.
Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.
Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.
“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.
The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.
“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.
“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”

Common OCD symptoms and how they manifest
Checking: the obsession or thoughts focus on some harm coming from things not being as they should, which usually centre around the theme of safety. For example, the obsession is “the building will burn down”, therefore the compulsion is checking that the oven is switched off.
Contamination: the obsession is focused on the presence of germs, dirt or harmful bacteria and how this will impact the person and/or their loved ones. For example, the obsession is “the floor is dirty; me and my family will get sick and die”, the compulsion is repetitive cleaning.
Orderliness: the obsession is a fear of sitting with uncomfortable feelings, or to prevent harm coming to oneself or others. Objectively there appears to be no logical link between the obsession and compulsion. For example,” I won’t feel right if the jars aren’t lined up” or “harm will come to my family if I don’t line up all the jars”, so the compulsion is therefore lining up the jars.
Intrusive thoughts: the intrusive thought is usually highly distressing and repetitive. Common examples may include thoughts of perpetrating violence towards others, harming others, or questions over one’s character or deeds, usually in conflict with the person’s true values. An example would be: “I think I might hurt my family”, which in turn leads to the compulsion of avoiding social gatherings.
Hoarding: the intrusive thought is the overvaluing of objects or possessions, while the compulsion is stashing or hoarding these items and refusing to let them go. For example, “this newspaper may come in useful one day”, therefore, the compulsion is hoarding newspapers instead of discarding them the next day.
