The world’s first Bear Grylls Explorers Camp (BGEC) is set to open in Ras Al Khaimah in October.
The camp, set to open on October 16, will offer visitors of all ages and abilities the chance to learn some of the British adventurer's top tips and techniques, via a selection of courses set on the Jebel Jais mountain.
The courses will be run by experts trained at the Bear Grylls Survival Academy in the UK, and will include half-day options, lasting three to four hours, as well as eight and 24-hour options. Later in the year, 48-hour and instructor courses will follow.
Those taking part in the course will receive training in practical and extreme survival techniques necessary to tackle some of the toughest terrain in the wilderness. While the courses will come with an element of surprise, participants can expect to learn how to make a fire, build emergency shelters and how to use a knife for survival, as well as receive dedicated practical instruction on remote medical trauma treatment, navigation techniques and extreme weather survival.
In 2021, Bear Grylls-branded accommodation will open at the camp for overnight stays, made up of 20 recycled and repurposed shipping containers. These will be able to host up to three guests with basic self-catering, including a private BBQ on a private outdoor terrace to prepare meals.
Bear Grylls is known worldwide as one of the most recognised faces of survival and outdoor adventure. Famed for TV shows such as World's Toughest Race, Running Wild, You Vs Wild and Man Vs Wild, SAS-trained Grylls has taken Barack Obama as well as some of Hollywood's biggest names on survival journeys through the wilderness.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.
Nisab: the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. Traditionally, the nisab threshold was 87.48 grams of gold, or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value of the nisab therefore varies by current prices and currencies.
Zakat Al Mal: the ‘cleansing’ of wealth, as one of the five pillars of Islam; a spiritual duty for all Muslims meeting the ‘nisab’ wealth criteria in a lunar year, to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth in alms to the deserving and needy.
Zakat Al Fitr: a donation to charity given during Ramadan, before Eid Al Fitr, in the form of food. When Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi
Known as The Lady of Arabic Song, Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi on November 28, 1971, as part of celebrations for the fifth anniversary of the accession of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as Ruler of Abu Dhabi. A concert hall was constructed for the event on land that is now Al Nahyan Stadium, behind Al Wahda Mall. The audience were treated to many of Kulthum's most well-known songs as part of the sold-out show, including Aghadan Alqak and Enta Omri.
Sole survivors
- Cecelia Crocker was on board Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 1987 when it crashed in Detroit, killing 154 people, including her parents and brother. The plane had hit a light pole on take off
- George Lamson Jr, from Minnesota, was on a Galaxy Airlines flight that crashed in Reno in 1985, killing 68 people. His entire seat was launched out of the plane

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
