The days of being asked "chicken or beef" on flights could soon be a thing of the past as airlines prepare to introduce pre-booked meal options.
Emirates will introduce a service that will allow passengers to book their in-flight meal before travelling.
This means that even travellers seated at the rear of the cabin will get their preferred option. Meals will be loaded on to planes according to the volume of pre-booked orders.
In the US, United Airlines is also trialling the service. The airline said some first-class passengers on a flight from Los Angeles to Washington on July 31 were able to reserve their meal.
Customers could select their preferred dish from five days to 24 hours before departure time. Passengers who did not book a meal could request a choice from the flight attendants.
Many low-cost airlines already allow passengers to book selected meals for a fee. Introducing bookable meals could allow airlines to offer more choice when it comes to in-flight dining.
Speaking on The Business Breakfast on Dubai Eye 103.8, Joost Heymeijer from Emirates in-flight catering said that the Dubai airline was working towards introducing the new service.
Emirates said it was a work in progress, and no timetable exists for its introduction.
Heymeijer also said that passengers travelling in the soon-to-launch Premium Economy class may be able to order their meals from the Business Class menu, rather than having the same food as economy passengers.

New process leads to panic among jobseekers
As a UAE-based travel agent who processes tourist visas from the Philippines, Jennifer Pacia Gado is fielding a lot of calls from concerned travellers just now. And they are all asking the same question.
“My clients are mostly Filipinos, and they [all want to know] about good conduct certificates,” says the 34-year-old Filipina, who has lived in the UAE for five years.
Ms Gado contacted the Philippines Embassy to get more information on the certificate so she can share it with her clients. She says many are worried about the process and associated costs – which could be as high as Dh500 to obtain and attest a good conduct certificate from the Philippines for jobseekers already living in the UAE.
“They are worried about this because when they arrive here without the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] clearance, it is a hassle because it takes time,” she says.
“They need to go first to the embassy to apply for the application of the NBI clearance. After that they have go to the police station [in the UAE] for the fingerprints. And then they will apply for the special power of attorney so that someone can finish the process in the Philippines. So it is a long process and more expensive if you are doing it from here.”

The National photo project
Chris Whiteoak, a photographer at The National, spent months taking some of Jacqui Allan's props around the UAE, positioning them perfectly in front of some of the country's most recognisable landmarks. He placed a pirate on Kite Beach, in front of the Burj Al Arab, the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland at the Burj Khalifa, and brought one of Allan's snails (Freddie, which represents her grandfather) to the Dubai Frame. In Abu Dhabi, a dinosaur went to Al Ain's Jebel Hafeet. And a flamingo was taken all the way to the Hatta Mountains. This special project suitably brings to life the quirky nature of Allan's prop shop (and Allan herself!).
