I sailed through security, having nothing to put through the scanner but my handbag. I strolled to the lounge, not having any small hands to grasp hold of and drag along.
I was delighted to find that even Virgin's new V-Room pay-for lounge, designed for families, nevertheless had an area with a polite notice: "Kids Turn Back". I sat there.
I'm alone. I've arrived in Las Vegas without any family at all. In my last column, I mentioned how much I was looking forward to having a very grown-up break in a very adult town. But now I'm here, I can't help notice there's an awful lot of clean and wholesome fun for kids in Sin City.
The hotels on the Strip provide a free family show, with the exploding volcano outside The Mirage, the gondolas at The Venetian and the juggling shows at Circus Circus, the fountains at Bellagio. I walked along muttering to myself like a mad woman (as I had no one else to mutter to), "This is great! The kids would love it!"
Seven-year-old River would have been so tickled to discover all the ever-so green lawns fronting the casinos are made of plastic grass. His twin sister Savanna's favourite place would have been the Liberace Museum, with the maestro's rhinestone roadster and rhinestone Baldwin grand piano to match his rhinestone costumes. It would probably have been my favourite too, if I'd had Savanna there to chat about it as we admired the fleet of jewel-encrusted Rolls Royces and explosion of feathers.
I bought Savanna a book of cut-out dress-up Liberace dolls in the gift store. I ended up spending far more on her than I would have done if she'd been there, pestering me.
However, having my teenager Storme in Vegas with me would involve more expense, as she'd have loved to hang out in the cafes, tasting all the odd mixed drinks and celebrity spotting. As I sipped my Arnold Palmer (iced tea mixed with lemonade) at a table for one at Café Society in the Encore hotel, I noticed Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne sitting close by. I wished, more than anything, that Storme had been having lunch with me so I could have kicked her under the table and whispered, "Look at that!" Instead, I just tucked into my tuna burger and made a mental note to tell her as soon as I got home.
Las Vegas is a fine family destination. Next time, I'll bring the kids.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
For sale
A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950
