Celebrated on the first day of Muharram, the month Mohammed and his followers emigrated from Mecca to Madina .
As with other Islamic holidays, it falls according to the lunar cycle so it changes every year. There are no religious observances proscribed for Al Hijra and is generally regarded as a day of reflection. In recent times, some Muslims have begun exchanging greeting cards to celebrate the holiday.
