Sheikh Zayed, who had been president of the UAE for eight years in 1979 when this photograph was taken, begins another Haj at Mina. He, like all other pilgrims, is wearing the white garment of Ihram.
While in Mina, Sheikh Zayed addressed a speech to Muslims, calling on Allah to grant unity to the Muslim community. He urged Muslims not to give up their hopes of liberating the holy places of Palestine. He repeated the position of the UAE to support the Palestinian struggle "until God proves the right and invalidates dishonesty".
Mina is about 5km from Mecca. On the first day of the Haj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that begins tomorrow, pilgrims gather in Mina. After morning prayers but before sunrise on the second day, pilgrims set off to Mount Arafat, where they stay until before sunset. It was on Mount Arafat that the Prophet Mohammed delivered his farewell sermon. It is a day of forgiveness.
After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, where they collect chickpea-sized stones, 21 in all. After midnight, pilgrims move on to Mecca where at the Grand Mosque in the heart of the city they circle the black granite Kaaba seven times before returning to Mina for the ritual stoning of the devil at the Jamarat Bridge.

‘Christ be our Light’ as the entrance song
‘All that I am’ for the offertory or during the symbolic offering of gifts at the altar
‘Make me a Channel of your Peace’ and ‘Soul of my Saviour’ for the communion
‘Tell out my Soul’ as the final hymn after the blessings from the Pope
The choir will also sing the hymn ‘Legions of Heaven’ in Arabic as ‘Assakiroo Sama’
There are 15 Arabic speakers from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan in the choir that comprises residents from the Philippines, India, France, Italy, America, Netherlands, Armenia and Indonesia
The choir will be accompanied by a brass ensemble and an organ
They will practice for the first time at the stadium on the eve of the public mass on Monday evening

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
