High-quality contemporary pieces are as relevant to a capsule jewellery collection as ever. And with high jewellery moving towards a rougher, less polished aesthetic, now is a good time to invest in statement pieces from avant-garde designers.
Enter Shoreditch Muse, the brainchild of the fashion designer and consultant Deborah Henning. After moving to Dubai, Henning identified a gap in the market for modern design and began encouraging upcoming international and regional designers to collaborate with Shoreditch Muse.
The pieces sold through this partnership are unique to the Middle East and are available exclusively at Shoreditch Muse’s monthly events – the next of which is taking place on Friday, May 2, and on Saturday, May 3, at Capital D Studio in Dubai’s Al Quoz district.
The jewellery brands on offer include OGJM, Jade Mellow and 22 Design, which will show their wares alongside a slew of womenswear, menswear and accessories labels.
OGJM – or Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer – was founded in 2009 by Genger, an artist, and Mayer, a jewellery designer. It all began when Mayer created a necklace for Genger out of a piece of rope strewn across her studio floor.
Jade Mellow, on the other hand, looks to her childhood for her beautifully textured pieces, which are inspired by fossils and mineral structures. Mellow’s father had converted a Victorian Chapel into their home, sowing the seeds for a love of history that is evident in Mellow’s designs to this day.
Meanwhile, the minimalist concrete and steel pieces by 22 Design, including the ring pictured here, are the handiwork of the Taipei-based duo Sean Yu and Yiting Cheng. The nine-year-old label reworks functional everyday materials to create unexpectedly striking accessories.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
