The world's tallest building lit up with the colours of the Philippine flag to celebrate Philippine Independence Day on Friday, June 12.

The 800-metre tall skyscraper LED panels showed the Philippines' blue and red flag colours, as well as the symbols of the sun and three stars. The stars refer to the Southeast Asian country's three major island while the sun's eight rays represents the provinces.

Philippine Independence Day commemorates the end of Spanish colonial rule in the Southeast Asian country.

"Together, let us thank the UAE for honouring the Philippines and the Filipinos on our Independence Day," Hjayceelyn M Quintana, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, said in a message for the community prior to the event.

The Burj Khalifa’s social media accounts posted an image of the display with the caption: “We wish the Filipino community progress and prosperity”.

The UAE has around 600,000 Filipinos residing in the country.

This year marked 122 years since Filipino revolutionary Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty of the Philippines after years of uprisings as part of the Philippine Revolution in 1898.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
