Ski Dubai to host a free skiing and snowboarding competition this August

If you’re on the lookout for ways to keep cool this summer, it doesn’t get much better than snow sports. The Dubai Sports Council has collaborated with Ski Dubai to organise a ski and snowboarding competition on Saturday, August 15.

The Return to Safe Sport competition is open to all competent racers, freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Those entering should have previous competition experience, be able to safely ski down a slalom course on the black run or be competent on the rails and jumps.

The competition is free to enter and open to anyone over the age of 6.

The event will be divided into four snow sports disciplines, including the Alpine speed disciplines of slalom skiing and giant slalom, and two freestyle disciplines: slopestyle and big air. The competition will be judged by a panel of freestyle judges and competitors stand the chance of winning medals as well as prizes, including tickets for Vox Cinemas, Ski Dubai and iFly Dubai, or lunch at Ski Dubai restaurant North 28.

“Ski Dubai is proud to collaborate with Dubai Sports Council to launch the world’s first snow sports competition since the Covid-19 closures. Dubai is leading the way and showing the rest of the world that, when the right measures are in place, sporting events and competitions can safely resume,” says Mohammad El Etri, director of global snow operations and projects at Majid Al Futtaim.

The competition has been organised as part of Ski Dubai's ongoing efforts to encourage a safe return to snow sports following the easing of restrictions. It is part of Dubai Sports Council's DXB Snow Week, which also includes the DXB Snow Run, a first-of-its-kind three-kilometre race through the snow for UAE residents between the ages of 18 and 62, on Friday, August 14.

Health and safety guidelines and social-distancing regulations have been put in place.

More information is at skidxb.com and registrations can be done through the Ski School.

How to invest in gold

Investors can tap into the gold price by purchasing physical jewellery, coins and even gold bars, but these need to be stored safely and possibly insured.

A cheaper and more straightforward way to benefit from gold price growth is to buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF).

Most advisers suggest sticking to “physical” ETFs. These hold actual gold bullion, bars and coins in a vault on investors’ behalf. Others do not hold gold but use derivatives to track the price instead, adding an extra layer of risk. The two biggest physical gold ETFs are SPDR Gold Trust and iShares Gold Trust.

Another way to invest in gold’s success is to buy gold mining stocks, but Mr Gravier says this brings added risks and can be more volatile. “They have a serious downside potential should the price consolidate.”

Mr Kyprianou says gold and gold miners are two different asset classes. “One is a commodity and the other is a company stock, which means they behave differently.”

Mining companies are a business, susceptible to other market forces, such as worker availability, health and safety, strikes, debt levels, and so on. “These have nothing to do with gold at all. It means that some companies will survive, others won’t.”

By contrast, when gold is mined, it just sits in a vault. “It doesn’t even rust, which means it retains its value,” Mr Kyprianou says.

You may already have exposure to gold miners in your portfolio, say, through an international ETF or actively managed mutual fund.

You could spread this risk with an actively managed fund that invests in a spread of gold miners, with the best known being BlackRock Gold & General. It is up an incredible 55 per cent over the past year, and 240 per cent over five years. As always, past performance is no guide to the future.

Key recommendations
  • Fewer criminals put behind bars and more to serve sentences in the community, with short sentences scrapped and many inmates released earlier.
  • Greater use of curfews and exclusion zones to deliver tougher supervision than ever on criminals.
  • Explore wider powers for judges to punish offenders by blocking them from attending football matches, banning them from driving or travelling abroad through an expansion of ‘ancillary orders’.
  • More Intensive Supervision Courts to tackle the root causes of crime such as alcohol and drug abuse – forcing repeat offenders to take part in tough treatment programmes or face prison.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.

A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.

Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.

A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.

On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.

The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.

Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.

The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.
