The Bugatti Atlantic becomes the most expensive car in the world

With a price tag more akin to that of a luxurious super yacht or a private jet, a 74-year-old Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was sold for more than US$30 million (Dh110 million).

SANTA MONICA // With a price tag more akin to that of a luxurious super yacht or a private jet, a 74-year-old Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was sold for more than US$30 million (Dh110 million).

Reports place the sale between $30-40 million, which easily surpasses the $12.2 million (Dh44.8 million) paid for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa last year.

Only two or three of the Atlantics are still around today, with one owned by the fashion designer Ralph Lauren. Another belonged to the late Dr Peter Williamson, a renowned Bugatti collector. Californian auction house Gooding & Company has been assisting the estate to sell the collection of Bugatti's Williamson had amassed.

"I am extremely pleased to have found the new buyer for the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, one of the world's most significant and valuable automobiles, that has been in a private collection and rarely seen during the past four decades," says David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company.

There are reports on autoblog.com that the car was purchased by Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California.
