Peugeot has introduced a pair of new rides into the UAE, in the shape of the all-new 2008 SUV and a GT version of its 508.
The two models are the latest in the manufacturer’s resurgence into Middle East markets, with vehicles it hopes will strike a chord with both the urban and desert-dwelling crowds.
According to Peugeot, the 2008 (which, confusingly, does not refer to the year) is “a versatile car that continues to demonstrate the compatibility between technology, style and driving pleasure”.
The exterior is neat, echoing many of its rivals in the SUV market, but avoiding the stylings of some of its blockier-looking competitors.
It comes with two engine variants, both 1.6-litres, but one with a six-speed transmission and the other upped to eight-speed.
The 508 GT, meanwhile, is a sportier version of the vehicle first unveiled in the UAE in 2019. This latest incarnation “exemplifies the brand’s vision of an exciting future”, so a little weight on its shoulders then.
The 508 GT is a sleeker version of Peugeot's earlier 504. Like the 2008, the latest arrival also has a 1.6-litre engine with an eight-speed transmission.
Both the new models are fitted with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, with a signature steering wheel, 10-inch touchscreen and multi-point seat massage.
The manufacturer is marking its 210th anniversary this year, though it was originally founded as a company involved in tool making and bicycle production.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
