SOUTH CAROLINA // BMW announced last week that it had made its one millionth X5 model within 11 years of production. The anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina and will be delivered to a customer in China. The X5 was first introduced in 1999, and at that time BMW-owned Land Rover and was able to utilise the expertise of the 4x4 manufacturer. BMW declared the X5 a new category of car, the sports activity vehicle. Spartanburg was originally used to build the Z3 roadster and the Z4, but production of sports cars was relocated to Germany in 2008, and the US plant became the main producer of BMW's X5 and X6, production of the X3 is scheduled to switch from Europe to the US later this year. The BMW X5 is now exported to more than 120 countries.

- Cecelia Crocker was on board Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 1987 when it crashed in Detroit, killing 154 people, including her parents and brother. The plane had hit a light pole on take off

UAE's role in anti-extremism recognised
General John Allen, President of the Brookings Institution research group, commended the role the UAE has played in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
He told a Globsec debate of the UAE’s "hugely outsized" role in the fight against Isis.
"It’s trite these days to say that any country punches above its weight, but in every possible way the Emirates did, both militarily, and very importantly, the UAE was extraordinarily helpful on getting to the issue of violent extremism," he said.
He also noted the impact that Hedayah, among others in the UAE, has played in addressing violent extremism.
