An all-new Toyota Corolla has arrived in the UAE, but it’s not what you might expect. Moving on from its traditional sedan guise, the latest version has taken on a compact SUV skin.
Dubbed the Corolla Cross, the car is exactly that – a new vehicle that attempts to combine everything buyers loved about the 12 generations of the original vehicle (and love it they do – since the Corolla's launch in 1966, about 45 million units have been shifted, making it the most sold car on Earth).
The Cross was unveiled in Thailand in July 2020 as a more practical and larger alternative to Toyota’s C-HR.
Available only as a hybrid, the Cross is a vehicle designed to “move occupants in comfort and style”, Toyota says, and the company has given it a gritty, urban exterior that is an indicator you can use it for more than your daily commute.
It’s no surprise than the new arrival as a higher ride height than its sedan sibling, alongside a wide stance giving the impression of stability.
Features include newly developed 17-inch alloy wheels, an air conditioning system with smart-flow control, a moon roof, a seven-inch multi-information display in the cluster gauge, an eight-inch multimedia display, and smart entry and start systems.
Power comes from a 1.8-litre petrol engine that works in tandem with two electric motors. Together, they produce a 122 horsepower. Drivers can also choose between Eco, Normal, and Sport modes, depending on what they're after.
You can see design clues from the Rav-4 in the Cross, but the latter is much more compact and has a lower base price.
The compact SUV market is tough, but the Corolla name badge should attract a little more attention than other newbies in the marketplace. That said, it remains to be seen whether hardcore fans of the sedan will be tempted by a crossover.
The Corolla Cross is in UAE Toyota showrooms now, and the vehicle has a starting price of Dh89,900.

One in four Americans don't plan to retire
Nearly a quarter of Americans say they never plan to retire, according to a poll that suggests a disconnection between individuals' retirement plans and the realities of ageing in the workforce.
Experts say illness, injury, layoffs and caregiving responsibilities often force older workers to leave their jobs sooner than they'd like.
According to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 23 per cent of workers, including nearly two in 10 of those over 50, don't expect to stop working. Roughly another quarter of Americans say they will continue working beyond their 65th birthday.
According to government data, about one in five people 65 and older was working or actively looking for a job in June. The study surveyed 1,423 adults in February this year.
For many, money has a lot to do with the decision to keep working.
"The average retirement age that we see in the data has gone up a little bit, but it hasn't gone up that much," says Anqi Chen, assistant director of savings research at the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. "So people have to live in retirement much longer, and they may not have enough assets to support themselves in retirement."
When asked how financially comfortable they feel about retirement, 14 per cent of Americans under the age of 50 and 29 per cent over 50 say they feel extremely or very prepared, according to the poll. About another four in 10 older adults say they do feel somewhat prepared, while just about one-third feel unprepared.
"One of the things about thinking about never retiring is that you didn't save a whole lot of money," says Ronni Bennett, 78, who was pushed out of her job as a New York City-based website editor at 63.
She searched for work in the immediate aftermath of her layoff, a process she describes as akin to "banging my head against a wall." Finding Manhattan too expensive without a steady stream of income, she eventually moved to Portland, Maine. A few years later, she moved again, to Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sometimes I fantasise that if I win the lottery, I'd go back to New York," says Ms Bennett.
The design
The protective shell is covered in solar panels to make use of light and produce energy. This will drastically reduce energy loss.
More than 80 per cent of the energy consumed by the French pavilion will be produced by the sun.
The architecture will control light sources to provide a highly insulated and airtight building.
The forecourt is protected from the sun and the plants will refresh the inner spaces.
A micro water treatment plant will recycle used water to supply the irrigation for the plants and to flush the toilets. This will reduce the pavilion’s need for fresh water by 30 per cent.
Energy-saving equipment will be used for all lighting and projections.
Beyond its use for the expo, the pavilion will be easy to dismantle and reuse the material.
Some elements of the metal frame can be prefabricated in a factory.
From architects to sound technicians and construction companies, a group of experts from 10 companies have created the pavilion.
Work will begin in May; the first stone will be laid in Dubai in the second quarter of 2019.
Construction of the pavilion will take 17 months from May 2019 to September 2020.

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.
It is a crime for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to or receive military-type training from or on behalf of a designated FTO.
Representatives and members of a designated FTO, if they are aliens, are inadmissible to and, in certain circumstances removable from, the United States.
Except as authorised by the Secretary of the Treasury, any US financial institution that becomes aware that it has possession of or control over funds in which an FTO or its agent has an interest must retain possession of or control over the funds and report the funds to the Treasury Department.
