Lifestyle survey observes local customs in the Philippines

MANILA, PHILIPPINES // The first automotive lifestyle survey conducted by the Philippines Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association has found that, while new car sales are down across the country, car lovers are still spending money on customising their existing cars. A survey of more than 1,000 motorists revealed that the desire to make a statement was the main reason for vehicle customisation. Customising a car for reasons of functionality was only secondary, the survey found. While customisation was proving more popular than buying new cars in the economic downturn, such modifications are not necessarily bargain-priced. Most basic bodykits start at P25,000 (Dh1,950) with some motorists spending as much as P300,000 (Dh23,500) on new sound systems and custom paintwork. Popular cars amongst the people dubbed by the survey as "auto-fashionistas" include the Honda Civic, Honda Jazz and Nissan GT-R.
