Du, the UAE's favourite monosyllabic telecommunications operator, is running a pretty interesting campaign trying to get people to visit its FIFA World Cup viewing tent in Dubai Media City with a savvy marketing campaign.

, the latest social networking darling that uses mobile devices' GPS units to identify where you and your friends are at.
More importantly, du has signed a deal with foursquare to let users who are checking in around Dubai Media City that there is a "special offer" to check into the operator's branded tent for a chance to win an iPhone. The "mayor" - the person with the most check in's by the time the first whistle is blown at the World Cup Finals - wins the big prize.
Aside from a funky shwarma shop in Dubai Healthcare City, this is the only other foursquare deal of note to land in the UAE and a positive step in getting more businesses using social networking to promote their business.
But, here's the thing, you don't really have to be inside du's World Cup tent to qualify for the iPhone.
Because GPS chips aren't 100 per cent accurate, foursquare allows people to check in to its service within a certain radium. I don't know what that radius actually is but it is probably around a few hundred metres.
Foursquare also allows you to check in to the same location multiple times as long as there is a significant time difference or you, say check into a nearby location and re-check into the tent.
So, if you really want to win that iPhone, you could probably sit inside Vapiano or in your office in the Thuraya tower and keep checking into the du tent until you've got that mayor title locked down.
While the offer may seem flawed, hats off should go out to du for being an early adopter of foursquare. Next time, though, it would be a better idea to give people free food or a gimmicky du branded football than losing a couple thousand dirhams on a mobile that anyone with a keen interest to win without really trying.

Start-up hopes to end Japan's love affair with cash
Across most of Asia, people pay for taxi rides, restaurant meals and merchandise with smartphone-readable barcodes — except in Japan, where cash still rules. Now, as the country’s biggest web companies race to dominate the payments market, one Tokyo-based startup says it has a fighting chance to win with its QR app.
Origami had a head start when it introduced a QR-code payment service in late 2015 and has since signed up fast-food chain KFC, Tokyo’s largest cab company Nihon Kotsu and convenience store operator Lawson. The company raised $66 million in September to expand nationwide and plans to more than double its staff of about 100 employees, says founder Yoshiki Yasui.
Origami is betting that stores, which until now relied on direct mail and email newsletters, will pay for the ability to reach customers on their smartphones. For example, a hair salon using Origami’s payment app would be able to send a message to past customers with a coupon for their next haircut.
Quick Response codes, the dotted squares that can be read by smartphone cameras, were invented in the 1990s by a unit of Toyota Motor to track automotive parts. But when the Japanese pioneered digital payments almost two decades ago with contactless cards for train fares, they chose the so-called near-field communications technology. The high cost of rolling out NFC payments, convenient ATMs and a culture where lost wallets are often returned have all been cited as reasons why cash remains king in the archipelago. In China, however, QR codes dominate.
Cashless payments, which includes credit cards, accounted for just 20 per cent of total consumer spending in Japan during 2016, compared with 60 per cent in China and 89 per cent in South Korea, according to a report by the Bank of Japan.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
Tips to stay safe during hot weather
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
- Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
- Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
- Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
- Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
- Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
