Beauty mogul Huda Kattan has pledged to donate one million meals to the 100 Million Meals initiative by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
Taking to Instagram, the Iraqi-American make-up artist said she wanted to "take part in this humbling humanitarian aid initiative by [the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives], who will be distributing food parcels to disadvantaged individuals during the blessed month of Ramadan".
She wrote: "At Huda Beauty, we are proud to support this initiative by donating one million meals. Together we can make a difference my loves."
Speaking in the video on her post, Kattan said: "It's hard to believe that in today's world, in 2021, we're still dealing with huge issues of hunger and malnutrition and that every 10 seconds, a child dies because of hunger."
The UAE has set out a plan to fund 100 million free meals in 20 countries across the region, in one of the biggest food drives of its kind.
Sheikh Mohammed unveiled the campaign on April 11, to ensure people in need do not go hungry, saying 820 million people are undernourished globally, including 52 million in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The campaign is an expansion of 2020's 10 Million Meals campaign, which helped people in the UAE who lost jobs and faced salary cuts during the pandemic. It also worked to feed people who would normally end their fast at free iftars at mosques and public places, which had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.
A website set up for the campaign allows people to donate as little as Dh10 to fund 10 meals, rising to Dh500 or more. You can do this via the website, SMS or bank transfer and even over the phone. All details on how to do it are available online.
Ahead of Ramadan, Kattan shared a video in which she asked Huda Beauty team members what Ramadan means to them. "Being patient", "invigorating", "connecting" and "compassion" were among the answers.
