Mr Draper, the UAE’s bespoke outfitting service for men, has joined forces with Vida Hotel in Downtown Dubai, to launch a unique styling and retail experience from the luxurious confines of one of the property’s suites.
“Rescuing men from the perils of the mall,” is how Mr Draper is positioning the service, which enables Vida’s guests to register with the personal shopper facility when making an online booking. “For the first time,” says Vida’s general manager, Daniel Kingston, “hotel guests do not need to worry about packing and can now have their holiday outfits ready at the hotel prior to their arrival. It’s perfect for guests who don’t want to carry luggage, have forgotten to pack an outfit or just in the mood to get styled.”
As with the local Mr Draper business model, guests will have five days to decide whether they want to keep anything, with unwanted items left for collection without charge. You only pay for what you want and anything you do purchase will be priced exactly the same as it would be at the relevant mall stores. The personal styling and delivery services don’t cost a single dirham.
Mahmoud Gao, founder and CEO of Mr Draper, says: "Men hate to shop, they tell us time-and-time again. It's why our business exists. This is us taking one more step to making the shopping experience as frictionless as possible, whilst adding one more dose of luxury and convenience."
To mark the launch of this partnership, an "exclusive Mr. Draper showroom" will be set up in one of the Vida's suites for the first 20 days in August, during which anyone can book a complimentary appointment with an expert stylist. If you'd still prefer to visit a physical store to choose a new outfit, other personal shopping services have proved to be extremely popular in the UAE. Style Factor in Dubai, for instance (style-factor.com), will visit your home, literally sort out your wardrobe and guide you round the shops if you feel you would benefit from some expert advice.
Some luxury department stores, such as Bloomingdales and Harvey Nichols, offer free personal shopping services, as well as in-house tailors, while Abu Dhabi's By Appointment (byappointmentme.com) caters for the shopping needs of the ultra-wealthy, sourcing anything from wardrobe essentials to timepieces and custom-built automobiles.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950

Types of fraud
Phishing: Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.
Smishing: The SMS equivalent of phishing. Fraudsters falsify the telephone number through “text spoofing,” so that it appears to be a genuine text from the bank.

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
