Looking for healthy snacks you can whip up quickly from the comfort of your home?
Children’s nutritionist and author Annabel Karmel makes a case for turning cooking time into family time using simple, healthy ingredients.
“There are a lot of advantages to getting kids involved in the kitchen at an early age,” Karmel said during a virtual session in association with the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair on Tuesday evening.
“It’s a great way to bond with your kids. Cooking is an important life skill and those who learn how to do it at an early age have a better diet and are less fussy. It also helps kids learn more about measuring and time management – but in a practical way.”
This is why Karmel is encouraging parents of young children to use this time in isolation to cook up a storm in the kitchen. The author shared some helpful tips on how to get (and keep) them interested:
Use recipes that are quick (because children have short attention spans).
- Have a rewards system in the kitchen – make a sheet and give them stars every time they try something new.
- Get them involved with the practical side of cooking – like measuring ingredients and rolling up dough.
Want to put these suggestions into practical use? Karmel also demonstrated how to make easy-peasy chocolate orange energy balls. These don’t require any cooking either – the perfect recipe to involve little ones. Here's how to make them:
Annabel Karmel's chocolate orange energy balls
Ingredients:
160g cashews
160g dates (seedless)
100g raisins
½ tsp orange essence
2 tbsp cocoa powder
Recipe:
Blitz the above ingredients in a blender until they reach a sticky consistency. Remove and roll into walnut-shaped balls (best to get the kids involved here). Roll the balls in desiccated coconut, cocoa or chocolate sprinkles for that final touch. Refrigerate for an hour and they’re ready. These energy balls last up to a week.

Three tips from La Perle's performers
1 The kind of water athletes drink is important. Gwilym Hooson, a 28-year-old British performer who is currently recovering from knee surgery, found that out when the company was still in Studio City, training for 12 hours a day. “The physio team was like: ‘Why is everyone getting cramps?’ And then they realised we had to add salt and sugar to the water,” he says.
2 A little chocolate is a good thing. “It’s emergency energy,” says Craig Paul Smith, La Perle’s head coach and former Cirque du Soleil performer, gesturing to an almost-empty open box of mini chocolate bars on his desk backstage.
3 Take chances, says Young, who has worked all over the world, including most recently at Dragone’s show in China. “Every time we go out of our comfort zone, we learn a lot about ourselves,” she says.

Stuck in a job without a pay rise? Here's what to do
Chris Greaves, the managing director of Hays Gulf Region, says those without a pay rise for an extended period must start asking questions – both of themselves and their employer.
“First, are they happy with that or do they want more?” he says. “Job-seeking is a time-consuming, frustrating and long-winded affair so are they prepared to put themselves through that rigmarole? Before they consider that, they must ask their employer what is happening.”
Most employees bring up pay rise queries at their annual performance appraisal and find out what the company has in store for them from a career perspective.
Those with no formal appraisal system, Mr Greaves says, should ask HR or their line manager for an assessment.
“You want to find out how they value your contribution and where your job could go,” he says. “You’ve got to be brave enough to ask some questions and if you don’t like the answers then you have to develop a strategy or change jobs if you are prepared to go through the job-seeking process.”
For those that do reach the salary negotiation with their current employer, Mr Greaves says there is no point in asking for less than 5 per cent.
“However, this can only really have any chance of success if you can identify where you add value to the business (preferably you can put a monetary value on it), or you can point to a sustained contribution above the call of duty or to other achievements you think your employer will value.”
