Celebrity British Chef Marco Pierre White's 2006 autobiography White Slave is being made into a film, led by director and producer Ridley Scott. The US version of the autobiography is titled: The Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness and the Making of a Great Chef.
Marco Pierre White was one of the first (if not the first) celebrity chefs in 1980s London. His mother died when he was six years old and White has famously said that event has shaped the rest of his life. He rose to rock star chef status during London’s culinary evolution.
Chefs Gordon Ramsey and Mario Batali both trained under White, which likely wasn’t easy for them. White was volatile in the kitchen and known for his temper. He once slit the back of a staff member’s clothes with a paring knife when said staff member complained of being too hot.
He was also known for kicking guests out of his restaurants if they complained or, even worse, if they asked for salt and pepper.
By age 33, White had three Michelin stars (when he retired from cooking in 1999, he gave them all back).
He is now a restaurateur with several successful restaurants in his portfolio, including Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi and the Marco Pierre White Grill at the Conrad Dubai.
Rumour has it that Russell Crowe, Orlando Bloom, Clive Owen and Rupert Everett are all being considered for the lead role.

The flights: Flydubai flies from Dubai to Kilimanjaro airport via Dar es Salaam from Dh1,619 return including taxes. The trip takes 8 hours.
The trek: Make sure that whatever tour company you select to climb Kilimanjaro, that it is a reputable one. The way to climb successfully would be with experienced guides and porters, from a company committed to quality, safety and an ethical approach to the mountain and its staff. Sonia Nazareth booked a VIP package through Safari Africa. The tour works out to $4,775 (Dh17,538) per person, based on a 4-person booking scheme, for 9 nights on the mountain (including one night before and after the trek at Arusha). The price includes all meals, a head guide, an assistant guide for every 2 trekkers, porters to carry the luggage, a cook and kitchen staff, a dining and mess tent, a sleeping tent set up for 2 persons, a chemical toilet and park entrance fees. The tiny ration of heated water provided for our bath in our makeshift private bathroom stall was the greatest luxury. A standard package, also based on a 4-person booking, works out to $3,050 (Dh11,202) per person.
When to go: You can climb Kili at any time of year, but the best months to ascend are January-February and September-October. Also good are July and August, if you’re tolerant of the colder weather that winter brings.
Do not underestimate the importance of kit. Even if you’re travelling at a relatively pleasant time, be geared up for the cold and the rain.

Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.
